Algorithms in modern mathematics and computer science

Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 1981
The life and work of the ninth century scientist al-Khwarizmi, "the father of algebra and algorithms," is surveyed briefly. Then a random sampling technique is used in an attempt to better understand the kinds of thinking that good mathematicians and computer scientists do and to analyze whether such thinking is significantly "algorithmic" in nature ...

Animating hashing algorithms for computer science education

Proceedings of the 1993 ACM conference on Computer science - CSC '93, 1993
We address the conceptual problem of how to visualize computer science algorithms by describing the hashing algorithm part of a large scale project focusing on algorithm animation for computer science education. We concentrate on the two tasks of how to visualize data objects and operations on those objects and illustrate our findings by discussing ...

Statistics and computer science

Proceedings of the 1978 annual conference on - ACM '78, 1978
BMDP is a comprehensive library of statistical computer programs integrated by a common English-based control language and self-documented save tiles for data and results. The major emphasis in the package is on providing software for the analysis of statistical data. Improvements and new programs are constantly being added.

AACE-algorithm animation for computer science education

Proceedings IEEE Workshop on Visual Languages, 2003
Describes AACE, a methodology for educational algorithm animation that the author developed while building an integrated hypermedia algorithm animation environment extending a fundamental algorithms textbook. After presenting the general structure of AACE, he discusses questions of the ideal user interface for algorithm animations.

A critical review of the notion of algorithm in computer science

Proceedings of the 1993 ACM conference on Computer science - CSC '93, 1993
We first review the development of the notion of the algorithm as a fundamental paradigm of mathematics. We then suggest a definition of computer science that distinguishes it from all other sciences and from mathematics. Finally we argue that the conceptual concerns of computer science are quite different from the conceptual concerns of mathematics ...

Putting the science into computer science

ACM SIGCSE Bulletin, 2007
This paper describes why the study of algorithms should be a fundamental component of the standard introductory computer science (CS) curriculum. By shifting the focus of basic CS classes from implementation to concept , educators can greatly enhance student understanding and course relevance

Memetic Algorithms and Their Applications in Computer Science

2018
The term “memetic algorithm” was introduced by Moscato is an extension of the traditional genetic algorithm. It uses a local search technique to reduce the likelihood of the premature convergence. Memetic algorithms are intrinsically concerned with exploiting all available knowledge about the problem under study. MAs are population-based metaheuristics.
