Alkalis and Skin

Journal of Burn Care & Research, 2016
The aim of this editorial is to provide an overview of the chemical interactions occurring in the skin of our patients on contact with alkaline agents. Strongly basic alkali is highly aggressive and will readily hydrolyze (or cleave) key biological molecules such as lipids and proteins.

Alkali interdiffusion in alkali feldspars

2014
Cation exchange experiments were conducted at 800°C to 1000°C and 1 bar using oriented plates of sanidine and NaCl-KCl salt mixtures as starting material. The formation of interdiffusion fronts propagating into the sanidine by Na-K-interdiffusion on the alkali sublattice was observed.

Fatal alkali burns

Forensic Science International, 1995
A case is reported of a worker in an aluminium plant who was found lying in a shallow pool of concentrated caustic solution, which had been heated to approximately 95 degrees C. He had been employed to operate a pump draining a sump. A pressurised ruptured airline lay nearby, this being the likely precipitating cause of an alkaline spray. The spray led

Alkali-Alkali Differential Spin-Exchange Scattering. II

Physical Review A, 1970
We present measurements of differential elastic cross sections for various alkali-alkali pairs, as well as the angular dependence of the probability of electron spin exchange in these collisions. The resolution is sufficient to reveal interference structure in the angular dependence of both quantities.

Mixed-alkali effect in alkali borate glasses

Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 1986
Abstract The spectral absorption of Cu2+ and Ni2+, the density, molar volume, refractive index, molar refraction, thermal expansion coefficient, transformation and dilatometric softening temperatures of mixed alkali borate glasses are reviewed. These results indicate that in borate glasses, mixed alkalis do not produce gross alterations of the glass ...

Alkali motion in alkali silicate glass

Journal of Applied Physics, 1979
Alkali motion in alkali silicate glass was studied by the method of ionic thermocurrent which was developed as a highly sensitive technique for studying relaxation of polarized impurity-vacancy dipoles in ionic crystals. Two current peaks were observed in the temperature range −196–100 °C, and were ascribed to orientational depolarization of ...

Alkali solute Knight shifts in alkali matrices

Journal of Physics C: Solid State Physics, 1970
Calculations are performed to obtain solute Knight shifts in binary alkali systems. The results are in semi-quantitative agreement with experiment. It would seem that the crucial parameter is the effective mass of valence electrons at the Fermi level.

Chlor-Alkali Products

1991
The production of chlorine and caustic soda is the story of the bulk inorganic commodities chemicals business. It is an example of a large scale manufacturing industry which uses high technology processes to create the basic raw materials used worldwide as the building blocks for industry.

Alkali-Sensitive Glycosides

1954
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of alkali-sensitive glycosides. It presents a classification of alkali-sensitive glycosides, which may be classified into three types: (1) glycosides of phenols, (2) glycosides of enols, and (3) glycosides of alcohols substituted in the β -position by a negative group. Reducing oligosaccharides are
