Durability of Silane Sealer in Highly Alkaline Environment

open access: yesACI Materials Journal, 2016
Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a reaction that occurs over time in concrete between the highly alkaline cement paste and reactive noncrystalline amorphous silica, which is found in many common aggregates. The reaction can lead to expansion and severe damage in concrete members.

Solar Heating Enhanced Selective Recovery of Metal Ions Through Flowing Electrodes Enabled by Hybrid Carbon Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new electrochemical system based on a microporous hybrid of carbon nanoplatelets and nanotubes to selectively capture Ni2+ from wastewater is constructed. The system temperature rises rapidly when irradiated with sunlight, which enhances the Ni2+ removal rate by 250% and the selectivity by 53%, and the energy consumption is also reduced by 51 ...

BIOMASS DELIGNIFICATION CHEMICAL PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING A ROMANIAN SPRUCE WOOD-INSULATING MATERIAL

open access: yesNonconventional Technologies Review
A procedure for making a wooden heat-insulating product for construction applications through lignin removing is presented in this paper. The non-conventional procedure is almost similar to that known and used in the pulp and paper industry, but the ...

The Effect of Amino Acids on the Formation of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biomineral formation often proceeds via the assembly of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles with narrow size distributions. Using in situ SAXS coupled to a stopped‐flow device, we follow synthetic ACC formation with a 10 ms time resolution and show that amino acids narrow the size distribution at low supersaturation, highlighting their key ...

Multimodal Structural Color Graphics Based on Colloidal Photonic Microdome Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid photonic system combining colloidal crystals and microscale domes is designed to achieve four switchable optical states via the interplay of Bragg reflection and TIR interference. The graphics composed of the photonic microdome arrays provide tunable, angle‐sensitive structural coloration and concealed‐to‐revealed transitions, offering a ...
