Chemical degradation of fluoroelastomer in an alkaline environment

Polymer Degradation and Stability, 2004
Abstract We have investigated the time-dependent chemical degradation of a fluoroelastomer, FKM (Viton® A), in an alkaline environment (10% NaOH, 80 °C). Optical microscopy and SEM analysis reveal that degradation starts with surface roughness right from the earliest stage of exposure (e.g., 1 week) and finally results in cracks on the surface after ...

The adaptations of fish to extremely alkaline environments

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1996
Abstract The Lake Magadi Tilapia (MT; Oreochromis alcalicus grahami , the Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT; Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi ) and the tarek (Ct; Chalcalburnus tarichi ) have evolved unique strategies that allow them to overcome problems associated with ammonia excretion (J Amm ) and acid-base regulation in their alkaline environments. In

Extreme Environments: Hypersaline, Alkaline, and Ion-Poor Waters

2012
The physiological mechanisms required for fish to live in freshwater and seawater are well described for some species and are the same mechanisms exploited in amphihaline species that migrate between freshwater and seawater. Many fish not only tolerate, but can acclimate and adapt to conditions outside conventional freshwater and seawater conditions ...

Metagenomics and recovery of enzyme genes from alkaline saline environments

Environmental Technology, 2010
Enzymes functioning at alkaline pH are widely used in the detergent industry as additives to improve the stain removal properties of domestic and industrial cleaning products. This industry provides by far the major mass market for enzymes. With constantly changing formulations in detergents and concerns over energy demands, new and improved enzymes ...

Electrochemically Enhanced Dissolution of Silica and Alumina in Alkaline Environments

Langmuir, 2019
Dissolution of mineral surfaces at asymmetric solid-liquid-solid interfaces in aqueous solutions occurs in technologically relevant processes, such as chemical/mechanical polishing (CMP) for semiconductor fabrication, formation and corrosion of structural materials, and crystallization of materials relevant to heterogeneous catalysis or drug delivery ...

Titanium corrosion in alkaline hydrogen peroxide environments

2009
The corrosion of Grade 2 titanium in alkaline hydrogen peroxide environments has been studied by weight loss corrosion tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and potentiodynamic polarography. Calcium ions and wood pulp were investigated as corrosion inhibitors.
