The C‐terminal region of KIF26B is indispensable for nephron progenitor condensation and kidney formation in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KIF26B plays an important role in kidney development. We engineered mice lacking the C‐terminal region of KIF26B and found severe kidney defects, including bilateral renal agenesis, similar to full Kif26b knockout mice. The mutation disrupted nephron progenitor condensation and reduced Gdnf‐Wnt11 signaling, showing that the KIF26B C‐terminal region is ...

Diverse alkane hydroxylase genes in microorganisms and environments

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2014
AlkB and CYP153 are important alkane hydroxylases responsible for aerobic alkane degradation in bioremediation of oil-polluted environments and microbial enhanced oil recovery.

Metabolic and stress responses of Acinetobacter oleivorans DR1 during long‐chain alkane degradation

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, 2017
Summary Acinetobacter oleivorans DR1 can utilize C12–C30 alkanes as a sole carbon source but not short‐chain alkanes (C6, C10). Two copies of each alkB‐, almA‐ and ladA‐type alkane hydroxylase (AH) are present in the genome of DR1 cells.

Treatment with KCL‐286, a first‐in‐class retinoic acid receptor‐β (RARβ) agonist, ameliorates neuronal DNA damage and inflammation in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Repair of neuronal DNA damage in Alzheimer's disease by KCL‐286. (A) Amyloid‐β oligomers and plaques impair neuronal DNA repair pathways, leading to DNA double‐strand breaks and glial activation. (B) KCL‐286 activates RARβ/RXR signalling via retinoic acid response elements (RAREs), associated with increased BRCA1 expression, enhanced DNA repair and ...

Functional screening of aldehyde decarbonylases for long-chain alkane production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2017
Background Low catalytic activities of pathway enzymes are often a limitation when using microbial based chemical production. Recent studies indicated that the enzyme activity of aldehyde decarbonylase (AD) is a critical bottleneck for alkane ...

Evaluating the effect of γ‐oryzanol on MASLD pathology using a medaka fish model

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores a liver disease called MASLD, which is increasing worldwide and can lead to serious damage. Researchers used medaka fish instead of rodents to test a food compound, γ‐oryzanol. Fish fed this compound had less liver fat and healthier gut bacteria.

De novo synthesis of short‐chain aldehydes and hydrocarbons secreted by the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, mainly secretes 4‐oxo‐(E)‐2‐hexenal, (E)‐2‐decenal, dodecane and tridecane, a mixture representative of that released by many heteropterans. We demonstrated that H. halys can synthesise these secretory components de novo using dietary glucose.

In situ detection of anaerobic alkane metabolites in subsurface environments

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2013
Alkanes comprise a substantial fraction of crude oil and refined fuels. As such, they are prevalent within deep subsurface fossil fuel deposits and in shallow subsurface environments such as aquifers that are contaminated with hydrocarbons.

Avidin is evolutionarily conserved in fish but dispensable for development and resistance against Streptococcus agalactiae in zebrafish

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The presence of biotin‐binding avidin proteins in fish and their biological significance are poorly characterized. We cataloged fish avidins and demonstrate that they are widely present and evolutionarily conserved. We created avd knockout zebrafish and show that zebavidin is dispensable for development and that resistance of avd knockout embryos in ...

A comprehensive detailed chemical kinetic reaction mechanism for combustion of n-alkane hydrocarbons from n-octane to n-hexadecane

open access: yes, 2009
Detailed chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms have been developed to describe the pyrolysis and oxidation of nine n-alkanes larger than n-heptane, including n-octane (n-C8H18), n-nonane (n-C9H20), n-decane (n-C10H22), n-undecane (n-C11H24), n-dodecane (n-
