A longitudinal study of radiodensity and radiographic appearance of the proximal sesamoid bones in Thoroughbred racehorses

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background There are limited data on long‐term follow‐up of radiographic changes of the proximal sesamoid bones (PSBs) in Thoroughbred racehorses. The effect of training and racing on radiodensity of the PSBs in live Thoroughbreds has not been described.

Using Catch Data to Estimate Changes in Global Commercial Abalone Abundance

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Changes in global wild capture production of abalone are explored to infer potential changes in biological stocks. The study found that 77% (or 10 out of the 13) of the countries that reportedly caught abalone in the wild have experienced declines in catches between 1980 and 2023, and on aggregate catch declined by almost 83% between 1980 and ...

Dynamics of a prey-predator system under the influence of the Allee effect and Holling type-II functional response [PDF]

open access: yesNetwork Biology
Capturing complicated dynamics and understanding the underlying controlling ecological processes is one of the major ecological issues. The Allee effect is an essential component in ecology, and considering it can have a substantial impact on system ...

Narratives Contextualizing Numeric Disclosures: Insights From Earnings Calls

open access: yesJournal of Business Finance &Accounting, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We investigate how narrative disclosures during earnings conference calls (ECCs) provide context for quantitative numeric disclosures in quarterly earnings releases, enhancing their informativeness. Drawing on a large sample of 34,918 quarterly ECCs from 1621 US‐listed firms from 2007 to 2020, we extract interpretable textual attributes—such ...

Firm‐Level Political Risk and Earnings Manipulation

open access: yesJournal of Business Finance &Accounting, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Using recently developed proxies for firm‐level political risk and earnings manipulation, we test the limited attention theory. Contrary to Hirshleifer and Teoh's core prediction that investor attention is associated with less managerial manipulation, we find that firm‐level political risk, serving as a proxy for investor attention, is ...

Complex Dynamics of a Diffusive Holling-Tanner Predator-Prey Model with the Allee Effect

open access: yesAbstract and Applied Analysis, 2013
We investigate the complex dynamics of a diffusive Holling-Tanner predation model with the Allee effect on prey analytically and numerically. We examine the existence of the positive equilibria and the related dynamical behaviors of the model and find ...

Evolutionary correlates and consequences of sociality in feliform carnivorans

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
We take a phylogenetic comparative approach to investigate the evolutionary correlates of sociality in feliform (cat‐like) carnivores. We find that sociality evolved eight times in this group of mammals, and that it is associated with ecologies that facilitate group cohesion (e.g. diurnality and open habitats) and also that should reduce competition (e.

Conspecific cueing or cooperative feeding?—Foraging stable flies are visually attracted to conspecific flies

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
In two‐choice laboratory bioassays, food‐deprived and CO2‐stimulated stable flies were offered paired landing platforms that were baited or not (control) with conspecific flies. The presence of conspecifics prompted the attraction and landing of foraging stable flies.

Dynamic Analysis of an Amensalism Model Driven by Multiple Factors: The Interwoven Impacts of Refuge, the Fear Effect, and the Allee Effect

open access: yesAxioms
This paper investigates a model of amensalism, in which the first species is influenced by the combined effects of refuge and fear, while the second species exhibits an additive Allee effect.
