Density Dependence During Evolutionary Rescue Increases Extinction Risk but Does Not Prevent Adaptation

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study investigates how density dependence influences evolutionary rescue in populations facing environmental stress. We found that while density dependence increases extinction risk by limiting population growth, it does not prevent adaptation in surviving populations.

Plastic Behavioral Responses to Ambient Relative Humidity Influence Aggregation in a Large Gregarious Insect

open access: yesEthology, Volume 132, Issue 1, Page 11-17, January 2026.
Madagascar hissing cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa) demonstrated an increased probability of performing aggregation behavior at higher ambient relative humidity levels, indicating environmentally dependent plasticity in social grouping behavior.

Incorporating Memory Effects in Population Ecology Using Fractional Derivatives: Stability Perspectives, Bifurcations, and Chaos Control

open access: yesComplexity, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
This study investigates a discrete‐time predator–prey model that includes both prey refuge and memory effects. The research identifies the conditions under which fixed points exist and remain stable. A key focus is placed on analyzing different types of bifurcation—such as period doubling (PD), Neimark–Sacker (NS), and strong resonances (1 : 2, 1 : 3 ...
