What Is the Allee Effect?

Oikos, 1999
W. C. Allee brought attention to the possibility of a positive relationship between aspects of fitness and population size over fifty years ago. This phenomenon, frequently termed the Allee effect, has been the focus of increased interest over the past two decades in the light of concerns over conservation and the problems of rarity.

The evidence for Allee effects

Population Ecology, 2009
AbstractAllee effects are an important dynamic phenomenon believed to be manifested in several population processes, notably extinction and invasion. Though widely cited in these contexts, the evidence for their strength and prevalence has not been critically evaluated.

Allee effects in biological invasions

Ecology Letters, 2005
AbstractUnderstanding the dynamics of small populations is obviously important for declining or rare species but is also particularly important for invading species. The Allee effect, where fitness is reduced when conspecific density is low, can dramatically affect the dynamics of biological invasions. Here, we summarize the literature of Allee effects

Competition models with Allee effects

Journal of Difference Equations and Applications, 2014
In this paper, we study a generalized two-species contest-competition model with an Allee effect. We provide a complete analysis of the global dynamics of the system. In particular, we determine all the invariant manifolds, the extinction, the exclusion and the coexistence regions.

Allee effects under climate change

Oikos, 2019
Understanding how climate change affects population dynamics is crucial for assessing future of biodiversity. Here I ask how can Allee effects, occurring when mean individual fitness is reduced in rare populations, respond to increasing temperature.

Hunting cooperation and Allee effects in predators

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2017
Cooperation is a ubiquitous behavior in many biological systems and is well-known for promoting Allee effects. However, few studies have paid attention to mechanisms inducing Allee effects in predators. Here, we focus on hunting cooperation and use a classical predator-prey system for identifying the impact of this mechanism.

Allee effects in stochastic populations

Oikos, 2002
The Allee effect, or inverse density dependence at low population sizes, could seriously impact preservation and management of biological populations. The mounting evidence for widespread Allee effects has lately inspired theoretical studies of how Allee effects alter population dynamics.

Allee effects and extinction debt

Ecological Modelling, 2011
Abstract Habitat destruction may have profound negative impacts on the biodiversity of a given environment. The presence of Allee effects compounds these problems. A sound understanding of the interplay between habitat destruction, Allee effects, and subsequent extinctions is needed to better guide conversation efforts.
