Virtual World, Defined from a Technological Perspective, and Applied to Video Games, Mixed Reality and the Metaverse

open access: yes, 2016
There is no generally accepted definition for a virtual world, with many complimentary terms and acronyms having emerged implying a virtual world. Advances in systems architecture techniques such as, host migration of instances, mobile ad-hoc networking,

Enhancing Triplet Excitons Lifetime Through Controlled Intermolecular Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Singlet fission (SF) is investigated in pentacene embedded in a surface‐anchored metal–organic framework, enabling a molecular arrangement inaccessible in pure organic crystals. This architecture changes the singlet fission dynamics significantly and enhances the triplet lifetime by almost four orders of magnitude.

Selective Crystal Growth and Optical Responses of 2H and 3R Polytypes in van der Waals Polar Insulator α‐In2Se3

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Selective growth protocols are established to obtain high‐quality bulk single crystals of the 2H and 3R polytypes of the vdW polar insulator α‐In2Se3, together with rapid, non‐destructive phase‐identification methods. Combined optical transmission and absolute reflectivity measurements, supported by DFT calculations, reveal distinct polytype‐dependent ...

La Constitución Española de 1812 en Goya

open access: yesAnales de Historia del Arte, 2008
We present the allegory of the Spanish Constitution engraved in 1812, and subsequently imitated by Goya in his portrait of king Fernando VII, painted in 1814 for the Town Hall of Santander.

Using drama to introduce ethics to technology students and practitioners [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this poster we describe the use of Joe Penhall's play 'Landscape with Weapon' as a resource to teach ethics to students and practitioners in technology. 'Landscape with Weapon' is a play in three acts that revolve around issues confronting an engineer

Electroluminescence and Franz–Keldysh Modulation Observed in Sn/Ge Multi‐Quantum Wells

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
We investigate the optoelectronic properties of PIN diodes based on ultrathin α‐Sn/Ge multiple quantum film structures, fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy, both experimentally and theoretically. The samples exhibit a light emission spectrum in the short‐wavelength infrared range with two transitions. Furthermore, when operating as a photodetector, we

Terahertz Chiral Recognition Based on Metasurfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
A novel terahertz chiral sensing method based on a multilayer metallic metasurface is proposed. The left‐handed circularly polarized and right‐handed circularly polarized components in the linearly polarized illuminating light into two focal points and convert them back into linear polarization for convenient measurement.

Multisensory legal machines and legal act production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper expands on the concept of legal machine which was presented first at IRIS 2011 in Salzburg. The research subjects are (1) the creation of institutional facts by machines, and (2) multimodal communication of legal content to humans.

The Implications of Interactions for Science and Philosophy

open access: yes, 2011
Reductionism has dominated science and philosophy for centuries. Complexity has recently shown that interactions---which reductionism neglects---are relevant for understanding phenomena.
