Orchard Management Influences Predation of Halyomorpha halys Eggs

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We investigated predation of eggs of the invasive stink bug Halyomorpha halys on apple trees in conventional, organic, and extensively managed Dutch orchards. Predation exceeded 40% in extensively managed orchards but was only about 10% in conventional and organic ones. We used camera traps to reveal natural enemies that may contribute to H.

Influence of alleycropping microclimate on the performance of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) and sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in the semi-desert region of northern Sudan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
An alley cropping system was established at Hudieba Research Station (17.57’N and 33.8’ E) on a loamy sand soil of the semi-desert region of northern Sudan. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of modified microclimate in 6-m wide

Comparing the economic performance of poplar-based alley cropping systems with arable farming in Brandenburg under varying site conditions and policy scenarios

open access: yesAgroforestry Systems
Agroforestry can address multiple environmental challenges across the agricultural sector, for example biodiversity loss and soil degradation. However, agroforestry uptake remains low in Germany.

Interactions between drought and shade on the productivity of winter pea grown in a 25‐year‐old walnut‐based alley cropping system

open access: yes, 2021
In the face of climate change, more frequent drought events are expected in the Mediterranean regions. Alley cropping is an agroforestry practice that represents a promising adaptation strategy to sustain yield productivity under drier conditions ...

Competition for Light Affects Alfalfa Biomass Production More Than Its Nutritive Value in an Olive-Based Alley-Cropping System

open access: yesForests, 2021
Cropping among trees with perennial legumes is one option for increasing agro-ecosystem services, such as improving the nitrogen supply and increasing soil protection by herbaceous vegetation.

The maize mitogen‐activated protein kinase kinase kinase gene ZmMAPKKK45 is associated with multiple disease resistance

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Southern leaf blight (SLB), caused by the necrotrophic fungus Cochliobolus heterostrophus, is a major foliar disease of maize (Zea mays) world‐wide. A genome‐wide association study was performed to dissect the genetic basis of SLB resistance in maize. Functional validation was performed using mutant and transgenic analyses.

Mixed Cropping of Dwarf Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) with Indigofera (Indigofera zollingeriana) using an Alley Cropping System

open access: yesOpen Agriculture Journal, 2021
Mixed cropping of forage grasses and legumes can potentially improve the performance of herbivores. However, the feasibility of grasses mixed-cropped with legumes should be examined at different plant densities.

Expression of a Bacterial Trehalose 6‐Phosphate Synthase Gene otsA in Camelina sativa Seeds Promotes the Channelling of Carbon Towards Oil Accumulation

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Improving seed oil yield is essential for developing Camelina sativa as a sustainable biofuel crop. Fatty acid synthesis depends on the production of acetyl‐CoA from photosynthetically derived sugars. Trehalose 6‐phosphate (T6P), a proxy for sucrose availability, can link sugar status to plant growth and development. Synthesised by trehalose 6‐
