Comparative endocranial anatomy in the crocodylians Leidyosuchus canadensis and Stangerochampsa mccabei from the upper Cretaceous of Alberta, Canada

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Leidyosuchus canadensis and Stangerochampsa mccabei share endocranial features such as posterior projection of a neurovascular canal in the maxilla and a paratympanic sinus system most similar to those of small‐bodied and young extant crocodylians, suggesting that these pedomorphic features may reflect the ancestral crocodylian condition.

Integrative taxonomy supports DNA barcoding in revealing an abundant cryptic species in the United States Coastal Plain

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
We present the most densely sampled phylogeny of Carex section Lupulinae to date (107 specimens) and describe herein a new cryptic species for science from the southern United States, which is locally abundant and found in well‐explored and densely populated areas. Combining DNA sequences with morphometric data obtained from 299 samples, we Demonstrate

Functional Characterization of the Cat and Dog Wild‐Type and Mutant MDR1 Carrier Proteins and Frequency of the MDR1 Gene Mutation in 800 Cats From Germany

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ATP‐binding cassette transporter MDR1 P‐glycoprotein (syn. ABCB1) is an efflux carrier at the cell membrane that regulates drug absorption, distribution, and elimination. At the blood–brain barrier, MDR1 restricts brain entry of potentially neurotoxic drugs, such as ivermectin. In dogs and cats, MDR1 (syn.

Nations as Natural Families: From Kin Selection to Multilevel Selection

open access: yesNations and Nationalism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In nationalism studies, nations are often viewed as artificial constructs. By contrast, many sociobiologists see nations as natural families or kin groups. They explain altruism and shared ancestry among co‐nationals through kin selection theory, which accounts for altruism towards close genetic relatives. In this article, we refine and deepen
