In assays investigating the abdominal sternal secretion of the cockroach Eurycotis floridana, it was determined that the secretion provides an effective deterrent against potential predators. Analysis of grooming patterns of Peromyscus leucopus mice revealed significant increases in mouth grooming and loss of coordination following exposure to E ...

A mantispid larva can preserve its spider egg prey: evidence for an aggressive allomone
Oecologia, 1983Data indicate that larvae of Mantispa uhleri Banks can halt the development of their spider egg prey. Absence of mechanical injury to the eggs suggests that halting is accomplished with an aggressive allomone. Such a mechanism allows larvae to consume eggs that might otherwise have hatched.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are taken up from plants by various butterflies and moths belonging to the Danainae, Ithomiinae, and Arctiidae, which use them for defence and for the production of male pheromones. A complex distribution scheme of these plant alkaloids by the insect has been established in some species.
