Alloy design and development of INCONEL718 type alloy
Materials Science & Engineering A: Structural Materials: Properties, Microstructure and Processing, 2009Abstract The effect of alloying elements such as Al, Ti, Nb, W and Co in INCONEL 718 type alloys on phase precipitation behavior has been investigated by means of Thermo-Calc software. The results show that both the solvus temperature and fraction of phases in 718 type alloys has been significantly changed with variation these alloying elements.

The quote on the right describes a very early example of "alloy design" in which the smiths of ancient times exploited the change in crystal structure that occurs in iron as it is heated or cooled. If iron has more than about 0.1% carbon by weight it is called heat-treatable steel and a hard, non-equilibrium structure termed "marten-site" can be frozen

The represenaion of metallurgical knowledge for alloy design
Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing, 1987This article gives an overview of the metallurgical database of ALADIN, an expert system that aids metallurgists in the design of new aluminum alloys. Declarative structured representations in the form of schemata are used for metallurgical data and concepts.
