Nation-Wide Clear-Cut Mapping in Sweden Using ALOS PALSAR Strip Images [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2012
Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array L-band type Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) backscatter images with 50 m pixel size (strip images) at HV-polarization were used to map clear-cuts at a regional and national level in Sweden.

Seasonal Change Analysis for ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 Deforestation Detection

IGARSS 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2020
JICA and JAXA have operated a tropical forest early warning system (JJ-FAST) since 2016 and ALOS-2 L-band SAR system (PALSAR-2/ScanSAR) is used for forest monitoring and deforestation detection. There are many factors to cause commission errors in SAR image and ground moisture is one of them.

Gravitation-Based Bilateral Filtering of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 Polarimetric Data

2021 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS, 2021
Speckle filtering is often carried out to improve the interpretation of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data for terrain classification, retrieval of physical scattering properties etc. As inspired by Newton's law of universal gravitation, a force of attraction between two image pixels is formulated in polarimetric-spatial domain.

Unsupervised Objects Classification in ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 Images

2020 IEEE Ukrainian Microwave Week (UkrMW), 2020
The paper suggests a new method for the unsupervised classification of multi-channel radar images on the basis of full polarimetric information. The main stages of the method are data preprocessing (with radiometric and geometric correction), synthesis of the hue-saturation-value image, threshold pixel-based segmentation according to the criterion of ...

Performance of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 for disaster response

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
In 2016, the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2, “DAICHI-2”) observed various disaster affected areas. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) operated the emergency observation more than hundred times in the year. The Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (PALSAR-2) aboard ALOS-2 contributed for detecting the disaster affected

Development status of PALSAR-2 onboard ALOS-2

SPIE Proceedings, 2011
The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) carries the state-of-the-art L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) called PALSAR-2. PALSAR-2 has a Spotlight mode (1 to 3 m), a Stripmap mode (3 to 10 m) and a ScanSAR mode, whilst PALSAR onboard ALOS had 10 m spatial resolution at best. The new technologies, such as maximum bandwidth allocation for L-

Polarimetric characteristics of temporarily coherent RFI in alos-2 palsar-2

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
This paper reports the polarimetric characteristics of temporarily coherent radio frequency interference (RFI) observed by ALOS-2 PALSAR-2. The RFI has high interferometric coherence as if it is a backscattered signal from the ground. However, its radio frequency band and the Doppler frequency are different from the backscattered signal.
