Genotypes of Alouatta palliata mexicana

2021
Mexican mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata mexicana) represent the northernmost populations of howler monkeys. This is considered a critically endangered subspecies, mainly threatened by habitat loss and transformation. Here we share the microsatellite genotype database for mantled howler monkey populations in Mexico (Alouatta palliata mexicana)

Adoption of infant howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata)

American Journal of Primatology, 1981
AbstractDuring 3 years of continuous field observations on mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata Gray) in Costa Rica we observed five infants without mothers in the main study group. Four of these infants solicited care and two were adopted (one permanently, one temporarily) by lactating females. The other two were carried but not adopted.

Coalitions and male–male behavior in Alouatta palliata

Primates, 2009
Coalitions influence the establishment and maintenance of social relationships among males in primate species. In this study, we compare the social behavior of males between two groups of Alouatta palliata: a group that was recently taken over by a coalition of two males (Mt), and a group that had a stable composition for at least 9 months (Rh).

Blood Groups of the Mantled Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata)

Journal of Medical Primatology, 1977
Fifty-two howler monkeys were tested for their human-type A-B-O blood groups. All were group B, as shown by the presence of B and H in their saliva, and anti-A in serum. The B-like agglutinogen of their red cells is common to all New World monkey species tested, and is of different origin and significance than their true A-B-O blood group.

Exploration and play in howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata)

Primates, 1978
Exploration and play were observed in eight troops of howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) containing 56 young and 95 adults. The behavior patterns of seven age classes are described. There was a clear trend for animals to spend less time in nonsocial exploration with increasing age, and for the frequency of social play to follow an inverted “U” pattern,

Correlates of hormonal modulation in mantled howler monkey males,Alouatta palliata

American Journal of Biological Anthropology, 2021
AbstractObjectivesThe study of hormone modulation may offer important insight into the responses of individuals to environmental challenges. Here we studied C‐peptide, thyroid hormone (T3), glucocorticoid (GC), and testosterone (T) metabolites of mantled howler males to assess: 1) correlations among hormones; 2) individual and temporal variation in ...
