Linking proximate drivers and fitness returns of vigilance in a large ungulate

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2025, Issue 2, February 2025.
Vigilance allows animals to quickly detect threats from conspecifics and predators to avoid or minimize costly encounters. Time spent vigilant is usually traded‐off against other fitness‐enhancing activities, such that fitness returns are expected when allocation to vigilance increases.

River crossings by Ateles geoffroyi and Alouatta pigra in southern Mexico: A preliminary report Habilidad para cruzar ríos en Ateles geoffroyi y Alouatta pigra en el sur de México: Un reporte preliminar

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Historia Natural, 2010
During a nine month field study, we assess the ability of spider (Ateles geoffroyi) and howler (Alouatta pigra) monkeys to cross a large Mesoamerican river, and if this behavior is related to deforestation and/or human population size on the disturbed ...

Watch out or relax: conspecifics affect vigilance in wild spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) [PDF]

open access: yes
In most animal species, predation risk is considered the main factor affecting vigilance, and an individual is expected to spend less time vigilant in larger than in smaller groups.

Morphological variation of genetically confirmed Alouatta Pigra × A. palliata hybrids from a natural hybrid zone in Tabasco, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
While hybridization has been reported for a large number of primate taxa, there is a general lack of data on hybrid morphology for wild individuals with known genetic ancestry.
