Seasonal variation in the positional behavior of red howling monkeys (Alouatta seniculus)
Primates, 1998Recent studies on the positional behavior of primates reveal that significant seasonal variation occurs in both locomotion and postures that is related to changes in diet and foraging techniques. Howling monkeys (genusAlouatta), which also have a seasonally varied diet, are predicted to have correspondingly varied positional behaviors.

A seasonal difference in howling at midday during the dry season is correlated with high temperature and high insolation. Interacting troops come closer to each other and roar more during the dry season, when they often meet around fruiting

The morphological relationships between the cranium and basihyal of red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) were analyzed based on measurements of 36 cranial and 3 basihyal dimensions and observations of the female specimen in spirits. In this study, 115 crania from 111 red howler monkeys and 4 mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) were used.

The effect of female call on male howling in red howler monkeys(Alouatta seniculus)
International Journal of Primatology, 1983Howler (Alouatta spp.)females often produce loud calls together with the males. Sometimes these howls are not heard above the much louder male call, but on other occasions most of the howls are produced by the females. Observations indicate that female howls are aggressive.
