The Function of Howling in Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Seniculus)

Male Relationships and Infant Deaths in Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta seniculus)
Zeitschrift für Tierpsychologie, 1983AbstractFor decades howler monkeys were considered to be among the most peaceful animals. Recent investigators, however, have noted that, although male aggression is rare, it may be extremely severe; the criteria used to quantify howler relationships should therefore be different from those used for other primates.

Incisor microwear and feeding behavior in Alouatta seniculus and Cebus olivaceus
American Journal of Primatology, 1990AbstractDental microwear features on the labial surfaces of maxillary central incisors of wild‐shot museum specimens of Cebus olivaceus (n = 11) and Alouatta seniculus (n = 7) were examined at 200 × by polarized light microscopy. While wear scratch orientation patterns do not differ between the two samples, Cebus has a significantly higher density of ...

Wild red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) were translocated during the flooding of the forest at a hydroelectric dam site in French Guiana. For a variety of minor clinical procedures, 96 monkeys were anesthetized with various intramuscular injections of combinations of medetomidine and ketamine. The howler population was composed of healthy animals (

Fruit choice by red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) in a tropical rain forest
American Journal of Primatology, 1996This paper presents and discusses aspects of fruit selectivity by red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) in relation with morphological characteristics of fruits. These data are used to provide an answer to the following questions: which are the fruit characteristics that lead fruit choice of howler monkeys and to what extent fruit characteristics ...

The Population Structure of Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) in Trinidad and Venezuela
Folia Primatologica, 1972The small troops and roughly even adult sexual ratio of Alouatta seniculus, studied in Bush Bush Forest in Trinidad and on the ranch Hato Masaguaral in the llanos of Venezuela, are more similar to A. caraya than to A. palliata. Other aspects of the troop composition are discussed.

The morphological relationships between the cranium and basihyal of red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) were analyzed based on measurements of 36 cranial and 3 basihyal dimensions and observations of the female specimen in spirits. In this study, 115 crania from 111 red howler monkeys and 4 mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) were used.

Seasonal variation in the positional behavior of red howling monkeys (Alouatta seniculus)
Primates, 1998Recent studies on the positional behavior of primates reveal that significant seasonal variation occurs in both locomotion and postures that is related to changes in diet and foraging techniques. Howling monkeys (genusAlouatta), which also have a seasonally varied diet, are predicted to have correspondingly varied positional behaviors.

Daily and Seasonal Patterns of Roaring and Spacing in Four Red Howler Alouatta seniculus Troops
Folia Primatologica, 1982Daytime and seasonal patterns of roaring and spacing are described for the red howler monkey, Alouatta seniculus. A seasonal difference in howling at midday during the dry season is correlated with high temperature and high insolation. Interacting troops come closer to each other and roar more during the dry season, when they often meet around fruiting
