Throat-Rubbing in Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Seniculus)
1983Olfactory communication in New World primates may be more developed than in most Old World monkeys and apes (Epple and Lorenz, 1967; Eisenberg, 1977). All the New World genera have glands in the sternal and/or gular region. The purpose of this paper is to describe throat-rubbing in wild red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus).

We surveyed howler (Alouatta) populations at 36 sites throughout the Brazilian state of Rondonia, in southwestern Amazonia, using quantitative (line transect surveys) and qualitative (interviews) methods. We recorded the red howler (Alouatta seniculus) at only one- third of the sites, and the species was relatively rare at most of them, especially in ...

Loud Calls of Adult Male Red Howling Monkeys (Alouatta seniculus)
Folia Primatologica, 1986Loud calls of adult male red howlers (Alouatta seniculus) inhabiting a deciduous and semideciduous open woodland site in Venezuela were recorded opportunistically and categorized by ear and sonographically as barks and roars. Five to six different bark syllables were identified as occurring singly or in sequences of doublets and triplets.

The Function of Howling in Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Seniculus)

Male Relationships and Infant Deaths in Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta seniculus)
Zeitschrift für Tierpsychologie, 1983AbstractFor decades howler monkeys were considered to be among the most peaceful animals. Recent investigators, however, have noted that, although male aggression is rare, it may be extremely severe; the criteria used to quantify howler relationships should therefore be different from those used for other primates.

Incisor microwear and feeding behavior in Alouatta seniculus and Cebus olivaceus
American Journal of Primatology, 1990AbstractDental microwear features on the labial surfaces of maxillary central incisors of wild‐shot museum specimens of Cebus olivaceus (n = 11) and Alouatta seniculus (n = 7) were examined at 200 × by polarized light microscopy. While wear scratch orientation patterns do not differ between the two samples, Cebus has a significantly higher density of ...

The Population Structure of Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) in Trinidad and Venezuela
Folia Primatologica, 1972The small troops and roughly even adult sexual ratio of Alouatta seniculus, studied in Bush Bush Forest in Trinidad and on the ranch Hato Masaguaral in the llanos of Venezuela, are more similar to A. caraya than to A. palliata. Other aspects of the troop composition are discussed.

Primates, 1982
The morphological relationships between the cranium and basihyal of red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) were analyzed based on measurements of 36 cranial and 3 basihyal dimensions and observations of the female specimen in spirits. In this study, 115 crania from 111 red howler monkeys and 4 mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) were used.

Seasonal variation in the positional behavior of red howling monkeys (Alouatta seniculus)
Primates, 1998Recent studies on the positional behavior of primates reveal that significant seasonal variation occurs in both locomotion and postures that is related to changes in diet and foraging techniques. Howling monkeys (genusAlouatta), which also have a seasonally varied diet, are predicted to have correspondingly varied positional behaviors.
