Impact of Two High‐Fiber Dietary Transitions on Fecal Consistency and Microbiota Composition in Captive Dromedary Camels (Camelus dromedarius) With Chronic Recurrent Diarrhea: A Pilot Study

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
High‐fiber dietary interventions reshaped the gut microbiota of captive dromedaries with chronic recurrent diarrhea, but responses varied among individuals. Despite taxonomic shifts, microbial metabolic functions remained remarkably stable, supporting the resilience of the dromedary gut ecosystem and the use of fiber‐based dietary management.

Coccidioidomycosis in alpacas in the southwestern United States

open access: yes, 2019
An anonymous web-based survey of alpaca owners was used to learn more about the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of coccidioidomycosis in alpacas in the United States. Thirty-seven owners, with 1,117 alpacas, completed the survey.

Textile characteristics of fiber from Huacaya alpacas (Vicugna pacos)

open access: yesScientia Agropecuaria, 2019
Fiber from alpacas represents a substantial component of economic output for South American countries. In this study it determined the textile characteristics of fibers obtained from Huacaya alpacas raised at the South American Camelids Research and ...

A Literature Review of Selected Bacterial Diseases in Alpacas and Llamas—Epidemiology, Clinical Signs and Diagnostics

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
The breeding of South American Camelids (SACs), particularly llamas and alpacas, is becoming increasingly popular in regions that are not their natural habitat, including Europe. These animals are considered to be relatively disease resistant.

From foraging to decomposition: Large vertebrates as biotic drivers of trace element cycling across landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We highlight an overlooked pathway in ecosystem functioning: the role of animal carcass decomposition in trace element cycling. By linking animal life cycles to landscape‐scale processes, we explain how large animals redistribute scarce elements and influence spatial heterogeneity, with implications for ecosystem functioning and restoration.

Malignant Neoplasia in Four Alpacas

open access: yes, 2004
Malignant neoplasia in 4 alpacas was characterized by acute onset of clinical signs and rapidly deteriorating condition. Postmortem examination revealed metastatic or multicentric neoplasia in the abdominal organs of alpacas 1, 3, and 4 and an extensive

Cardiovascular Plasticity and Adaptation of High‐Altitude Birds and Mammals

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This schematic depicts the cardiovascular adaptations of mammals and birds to high‐altitude hypoxia. It highlights key phenotypic changes in oxygen transport and cardiac responses, driven by molecular mechanisms including transcriptional regulation and genetic modifications.

Quantitative genetic analysis of micron blowout in Alpacas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Some alpacas maintain fine fibre throughout life, while others suffer from significant coarsening of fibre as they age, a trait known as micron blowout. Micron blowout results in reduced productivity, through reduced yield of high quality fibre over the ...

The ALPACA Project [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
We have started up the ALPACA (Andes Large area PArticle detector for Cosmic ray physics and Astronomy) project. The ALPACA experiment is composed of an 83,000 m2 air shower array and a 5,400 m2 underground muon detector array to make wide field-of-view high-sensitivity observations of high-energy cosmic rays/cosmic gamma rays on the Cerro Estuqueria ...
