Enhanced alpha plane line protection
2016 National Power Systems Conference (NPSC), 2016The ratio of currents at both ends of the transmission line is utilized in alpha plane differential principle to detect an internal fault. Such a scheme uses either phase current or sequence currents. As the ratio computed using phase current and sequence currents has their own demerits, both are combined to enhance the security and sensitivity of the ...

Generalized alpha plane for numerical differential protection applications
2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2016In this letter, a new generalized alpha plane (GAP) is proposed for numerical differential protection applications. Its performance is thoroughly evaluated for a wide variety of faults simulated in a 500 kV three-terminal transmission line using the Alternative Transients Program.

Enhanced sensitive phase alpha plane scheme against high resistance ground faults
International Journal of Emerging Electric Power Systems, 2023AbstractPhase-based Alpha (α) Plane Relaying (APR) scheme has numerous advantages over the Current Differential Relay (CDR) for transmission line protection. Since the large Restraining Region (RR) in the APR makes high security against CT saturation, channel delay, line charging current and synchronization error. However, the APR loses its sensitivity

Busbar differential protection based on generalized alpha plane
2017 Workshop on Communication Networks and Power Systems (WCNPS), 2017This paper presents the analysis of the benefits provided by Generalized Alpha Plane (GAP) to low-impedance busbar differential protection. Its main advantages are the simplicity and the possibility to define several restraint characteristics. In order to do so, the GAP was evaluated for busbar protection using the software ATPDraw, through which a ...

Impact of UPFC on alpha plane line current differential protection
2017 7th International Conference on Power Systems (ICPS), 2017This paper presents an impact on alpha plane characteristics of line current differential protection in presence of unified power flow controller (UPFC). UPFC is a versatile device with the ability to regulate bus voltage and control power flow of the transmission line independently and simultaneously; hence, it has an impact on the current signals ...

$\alpha$-Plane Representation for Type-2 Fuzzy Sets: Theory and Applications
IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, 2009This paper 1) reviews the alpha-plane representation of a type-2 fuzzy set (T2 FS), which is a representation that is comparable to the alpha-cut representation of a type-1 FS (T1 FS) and is useful for both theoretical and computational studies of and for T2 FSs; 2) proves that set theoretic operations for T2 FSs can be computed using very simple alpha-

Revisions on Alpha Plane for Enhanced Sensitivity of Line Differential Protection
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2018Line current differential protection based on the traditional alpha plane may block internal faults with outfeed when providing higher security for external faults under current transformer (CT) saturation. This letter proves analytically that the external faults under CT saturation plot away from the negative real-axis of the complex plane and ...

Impact of Series Compensation on Alpha Plane Line Current Differential Protection Scheme
2019 IEEE 16th India Council International Conference (INDICON), 2019This paper presents an impact of series compensation on alpha plane line current differential protection scheme. Though series capacitors are applied in the transmission line to maximize the overall power transfer, they cause voltage and current inversion, which results in change in phasors.

2019 Workshop on Communication Networks and Power Systems (WCNPS), 2019
This paper presents an experimental validation of an alternative generalized alpha plane formulation applied to busbar differential protection in a commercial relay. Aiming to do so, a sensitivity analysis was performed considering various scenarios of internal faults in a 230 kV busbar with double bus, single breaker and five disconnects configuration,
