Achievement of Sustained Net Plasma Heating in a Fusion Experiment with the Optometrist Algorithm

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Many fields of basic and applied science require efficiently exploring complex systems with high dimensionality. An example of such a challenge is optimising the performance of plasma fusion experiments.

Investigation of the fine structure of antihydrogen. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
At the historic Shelter Island Conference on the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in 1947, Willis Lamb reported an unexpected feature in the fine structure of atomic hydrogen: a separation of the 2S1/2 and 2P1/2 states1.

Neutron star deformation due to poloidal-toroidal magnetic fields of arbitrary multipole order: a new analytic approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A recipe is presented to construct an analytic, self-consistent model of a non-barotropic neutron star with a poloidal-toroidal field of arbitrary multipole order, whose toroidal component is confined in a torus around the neutral curve inside the star ...

Suppressed ion-scale turbulence in a hot high-β plasma

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Magnetic fusion reactors with higher ratio of plasma kinetic pressure to magnetic pressure are economically desirable. The authors demonstrate a path to such a reactor in a field reversed configuration that can attain microstability and reduced particle ...

New distributional record of the Indo-Pacific tropical sand goby, Favonigobius reichei (Actinopterygii, Gobiiformes, Gobiidae), from Jeju-do Island, Korea [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria
Two specimens, a male–female pair of Favonigobius reichei (Bleeker, 1854) (32.7–41.9 mm SL) were collected from the intertidal zone based on sandy and muddy areas in Jeju-do Island, Korea.

Buffett's Alpha [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has realized a Sharpe ratio of 0.79 with significant alpha to traditional risk factors. The alpha became insignificant, however, when we controlled for exposure to the factors "betting against beta" and "quality minus junk." Furthermore, we estimate that Buffett's leverage is about 1.7 to 1, on average.

Microscopic mechanism of thermomolecular orientation and polarization

open access: yes, 2016
Recent molecular dynamics simulations show that thermal gradients can induce electric fields in water that are comparable in magnitude to electric fields seen in ionic thin films and biomembranes.

AlphaBind, a domain-specific model to predict and optimize antibody–antigen binding affinity

open access: yesmAbs
Antibodies are versatile therapeutic molecules that use combinatorial sequence diversity to cover a vast fitness landscape. Designing optimal antibody sequences, however, remains a major challenge.

Towards a precision computation of f_Bs in quenched QCD

open access: yes, 2003
We present a computation of the decay constant f_Bs in quenched QCD. Our strategy is to combine new precise data from the static approximation with an interpolation of the decay constant around the charm quark mass region.
