Robust Alternative Minimization for Matrix Completion
IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B (Cybernetics), 2012Recently, much attention has been drawn to the problem of matrix completion, which arises in a number of fields, including computer vision, pattern recognition, sensor network, and recommendation systems. This paper proposes a novel algorithm, named robust alternative minimization (RAM), which is based on the constraint of low rank to complete an ...

Learning Sparsely Used Overcomplete Dictionaries via Alternating Minimization [PDF]
We consider the problem of sparse coding, where each sample consists of a sparse linear combination of a set of dictionary atoms, and the task is to learn both the dictionary elements and the mixing coefficients.

Model minimization ?An alternative to circumscription
Journal of Automated Reasoning, 1988The idea underlying John McCarthy’s notion of circumscription is interpreted, for formulas with finite models, as asking whether the conclusion C is true in all the minimal finite models of the premise T. A way of modifying one of the usual proof procedures for first-order logic (the tableau method) is given which captures this idea.

Minimal sets alternative to minimal Geršgorin sets
Applied Numerical Mathematics, 2010Localization regions for the real eigenvalues or the real parts of the eigenvalues of a given real matrix \(A\) were studied by \textit{J. M. Penã} [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 22, No.~4, 1027--1037 (2001; Zbl 0986.15015)], who introduced the notions of row \(\mathcal B\)-set and \(\mathcal B\)-set.

Interference alignment via alternating minimization
2009 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, 2009Using interference alignment, it has been shown that the number of degrees of freedom in the interference channel scales linearly with the number of users. Unfortunately, closed-form solutions for interference alignment over constant-coefficient channels with more than 3 users are difficult to derive.

An alternative account of the minimal counterintuitiveness effect
Cognitive Systems Research, 2010This paper outlines two approaches to account for the finding that concepts that are minimally counterintuitive are better remembered than intuitive or maximally counterintuitive concepts. The first approach considers such memory advantages to be a property of the concepts themselves while the second approach emphasizes the role played by the context ...

Sampling of Alternatives in Random Regret Minimization Models
Transportation Science, 2016Sampling of alternatives is often required in discrete choice models to reduce the computational burden and to avoid describing a large number of attributes. This approach has been used in many areas, including modeling of route choice, vehicle ownership, trip destination, residential location, and activity scheduling.
