Metastasis–An alternative hypothesis
Cancer, 2005AbstractThe currently accepted models of metastasis are inconsistent with many clinical observations of the natural history of cancer and its response to therapy. Specifically, the authors suggest that it is time for a “paradigm shift.” It is time to reject the “local, regional, systemic hypothesis” of cancer and replace it with a hypothesis more ...

Amyloid Beta: The Alternate Hypothesis
Current Alzheimer Research, 2006Alzheimer disease (AD) is a devastating condition and patients, caregivers, clinicians, and scientists are eager to decipher the underlying disease mechanism and, thereafter, target this therapeutically. Most investigators studying the underlying cause of AD have focused on amyloid-beta (Abeta) such that the Amyloid Cascade Hypothesis is the ...

Ovarian Carcinogenesis: An Alternative Hypothesis
2008Observations indicate three different tissues of origin for ovarian carcinoma. The ovarian surface epithelium, oviduct epithelium (TSE), and derivates of the Müllerian duct. This chapter discusses the TSE-related ovarian carcinogenesis (exfoliation theory).

Presacral extramedullary hematopoiesis: An alternative hypothesis
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2013Idiopathic extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is the production of blood cells outside of the bone marrow without an underlying hematological pathology. This article examines the rare case of idiopathic EMH in the presacral area. A 65-year-old woman with a past medical history of a total abdominal hysterectomy and a negative hematological history ...

Molecular Circadian Oscillators: An Alternative Hypothesis
Journal of Biological Rhythms, 1998Results from experiments in different organisms have shown that elements of input pathways can themselves be under circadian control and that outputs might feed back into the oscillator. In addition, it has become clear that there might be redundancies in the generation of circadian rhythmicity, even within single cells.

Handedness: An alternative hypothesis
Behavior Genetics, 1982Handedness data collected during the Hawaii Family Study of Cognition were congruent with similar data from major published studies. Mixed-model segregation analysis did not detect a significant major gene or polygenes contributing to handedness and partitioned the total phenotypic variation into 10–20% genetic and 80–90% environmental components.

Sonoluminescence: An alternative “electrohydrodynamic” hypothesis
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1997A mechanism is proposed for the sonoluminescence (SL) arising from a single bubble maintained in levitation by an acoustic field. This proposal follows from a plasma diagnostic analysis which reveals that a single Ar bubble is characterized by a sparklike plasma (electron temperature and density: 20 000 K and 1025 m−3, respectively).

Projective Identification: An Alternative Hypothesis
The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 1987The concept of projective identification as a primitive defense mechanism is reassessed. An alternative hypothesis is offered: that projective identification can best be understood as a compromise formation which includes as its major component an "identification with the aggressor" or a "turning of passive into active." This reversal is demonstrated ...

An Alternative Hypothesis for Iris Maldevelopment (Aniridia)
Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, 1986ABSTRACT Two principal hypotheses for the pathogenesis of hypoplastic iris development ("aniridia") have been proposed: 1) the ectodermal theory, positing incomplete elaboration of the cup, resulting in an absence of framework for further development; and 2) the "mesodermal" theory ,wherein inadequate migration or proliferation of mesenchymal

Alternative models of the stress buffering hypothesis
American Journal of Community Psychology, 1989The interactive effects of life events and social support on a DSM-III diagnosis of major depressive episode and on number of depressive symptoms were examined. Data are from a stratified random sample of 3,732 community-dwelling adults. The paper focuses on differences between linear probability models and logistic regression models with regard to the
