Postoperative wide complex tachycardia: An alternative hypothesis
Heart Rhythm, 2013s p g s a b s o c m w t t Case presentation We present the case of a 78-year-old man undergoing aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis. He had no history of tachyarrhythmia or preexcitation and had preserved left ventricular function with mild left ventricular hypertrophy.

Nicotine and cigarette smoking: An alternative hypothesis
Medical Hypotheses, 1985A new hypothesis is presented to explain some aspects of human smoking behaviour. While acknowledging the importance of the nicotine self-titration phenomenon, changes in puffing intensity during the smoking of a single cigarette are related not to the control of nicotine uptake but to the modification of cigarette smoke composition prior to inhalation.

The blood-brain barrier: an alternative hypothesis
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1982Abstract Brain blood vessels, unlike most vessels elsewhere in the body, exhibit a blood-brain barrier (BBB) to certain substances, e.g. trypan blue. Under some circumstances this barrier is no longer effective and the permeability of the vessels increases. Although capillarization is much less in the brain than in many other organs, e.g.

Sucrose – An Alternative Dietary Hypothesis
2010Added (extrinsic) sugar (sucrose) consumption increased greatly from 1900 to 1960 in Britain and similar countries. John Yudkin suggested this was responsible for the appearance and increase of CHD. Sucrose could act by increasing plasma triglycerides. This hypothesis was presented in a popular best seller “Pure, White and Deadly”.

Graft-versus-host disease: an alternative hypothesis
Immunology Today, 1989Medawar and Billingham in their classic experiments described three prerequisites for the development of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD): first, the presence of immunocompetent cells in the donor inoculum; second, the inability of the recipient to reject the donor cells; and third, a histocompatibility difference between the donor and recipient. These

Mechanism of chemical carcinogenesis: An alternative hypothesis
Medical Hypotheses, 1991Ultimate carcinogens are usually very reactive electrophilic species and therefore of transient existence in the cell. Both because of the biological reactivity and the inherent danger in their reaction with DNA, direct interaction with the latter is prevented, especially in higher mammalian cells, by various cell defence mechanisms and, lastly, by a ...

Microvascular compression: an alternative view and hypothesis
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1989✓ The concept of microvascular compression (MVC) is discussed critically. The root entry or exit zone is defined: it is much shorter than generally realized. The anatomy of the intracranial vessels is considered, as well as known facts concerning trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia relating to MVC.
