An Alternative Performance Measure

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2009
In this paper, we present a new alternative performance measure (APM) which evaluates not only for the marginal distribution of a given fund but also its’ dependence (correlation) with a reference portfolio. This performance measure is of particular value in assessing hedge fund return as the latter are selected not only for yield enhancement but also ...

Kurtosis measures : tradition, contradictions, alternatives

Statistica & Applicazioni : V, 2, 2007, 2007
The fundamental problem with the classical coefficient of kurtosis Beta_2 is that it is not clear what it exactly measures. We here investigate whether Beta_2 has a simple interpretation according to Zenga's kurtosis diagram. Our answer is negative, even in the symmetric case.

Alternating streaming current measurements

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1975
Abstract The streaming currents which result when a sinusoidally alternating fluid flow is forced through a cylindrical capillary allow the rapid and reproducible measurement of electrokinetic phenomena. An apparatus for measuring the currents can be constructed easily and inexpensively.

Alternative measures of fertility compromise

Fertility and Sterility, 2008
Fertility has been defined in many ways-from the demographers practice of simply recording the number of children born, to the precise (but difficult to measure) monthly probability of conception. Infertility is likewise variably defined, making comparison of data across studies difficult.

Alternative measures of bilingualism

Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1969
A variety of techniques for the measurement and description of bilingualism, derived separately from the disciplines of linguistics, psychology, and sociology, were administered to the same respondents, 48 Spanish-English bilinguals who lived in a Peurto Rican neighborhood near New York, in order to assess the relationship among these measures and ...

Alternative Measures of Inflation

1980
During periods of rapidly changing prices, it's important to measure inflation in order to monitor price changes and to separate changes in the real value of economic activity from the effect of inflation. Prices paid by consumers are reported each month by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and by the Department of Commerce's ...

Alternatives to HRTF measurement

2012 35th International Conference on Telecommunications and Signal Processing (TSP), 2012
This paper compares methods to acquire the HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) applicable to navigation purposes, especially for the visually impaired. The most frequently used method for the HRTF acquisition (in general case) is the direct measurement of the HRTF. However, this method is very time-demanding.

Methodological Alternatives for Measuring Premature Mortality

American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 1988
Although crude and age-adjusted mortality statistics are frequently used to quantify public health problems, they are heavily influenced by the underlying disease processes of the elderly. Alternative measures have been developed to reflect the mortality experience of younger age groups (i.e., premature mortality).

Measuring contraceptive values: An alternative approach

Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 1991
Previous assessments of individuals' values for various contraceptive consequences have employed one of four methodologies: free elicitation, direct ratings, multiple regression, or factor analysis. All four methodologies are flawed because they produce group rather than individual values, relying on rating scales, and fail to incorporate information ...
