Medium‐sized predators sometimes switch to alternative prey species as their main prey declines. Our objective of this study was to test the alternative prey hypothesis for a medium sized predator (red fox, Vulpes vulpes ), a small cyclically fluctuating main prey (microtine voles) and larger

Internally driven alternation of functional traits in a multispecies predator–prey system
Ecology, 2010The individual functional traits of different species play a key role for ecosystem function in aquatic and terrestrial systems. We modeled a multispecies predator–prey system with functionally different predator and prey species based on observations of the community dynamics of ciliates and their algal prey in Lake Constance.

Effects of alternative prey on cannibalism in age-1 bluefish
Journal of Fish Biology, 1999Age‐1 bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix were offered both age‐0 bluefish and age‐1 Atlantic silversides Menidia menidia in the following proportions: 0:1·0, 0·25:0·75, 0·5:0·5, 0·75:0·25, 1·0:0. Atlantic silversides were consumed in greater proportion than offered throughout all treatments suggesting strong selection for silversides.

Alternative prey disrupt biocontrol by a guild of generalist predators
Biological Control, 2005We examined the potential of a guild of generalist predators to control Colorado potato beetles (“CPB,” Leptinotarsa decemlineata) on potato. We were interested in determining whether beetle suppression would change with varying predator density, and with varying background densities of green peach aphids (“GPA,” Myzus persicae), which are common ...

The Effect of Alternative Prey on the Functional Response of Notonecta Hoffmani
Ecology, 1989Continuous observations were made to determine the effect of alternative prey on the functional response of the aquatic bug Notonecta hoffmani to mosquito larvae (Culex pipiens). Mosquito larvae and two alternative prey, the zooplankter Daphnia pulex and vestigial—winged Drosophila (representing terrestrial prey trapped on the water surface), were ...

Individual vulnerability to predation: the effect of alternative prey types
Freshwater Biology, 1988SUMMARY. 1. Many examples of predator‐prey interactions from freshwaters suggest that apparent predator preferences result more from the relative vulnerabilities of prey than any positive choice by the predator.2. The rank order of vulnerability of seven invertebrate prey to nine invertebrate predators was measured in the laboratory.
