In the terminal area and for the approach and landing phase, radio provides the most appropriate method of height measurement. That is to say that the altitude reference frame is switched from barometric to terrain clearance measurement. It is at first a little surprising to see from Mr.

Satellite Altimetry Applications
MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest, 1975This paper provides a brief background of precision satellite altimetry. A description of satellite altimetry concepts and instrumentation is presented. The parameters measured, supporting data, and techniques, as well as physical limitations, are discussed. In addition, results are shown and a variety of applications is emphasized.

Sea Modeling by Microwave Altimetry
2006In this note the applications of altimeter data to the monitoring of the sea surface height and, in particular, to the evaluation of large-scale oceanic currents are reviewed. The general problem of the altimeter measurement, with a special reference to the TOPEX/POSEIDON mission, is discussed.
