Manufacturing and characterization of sustainable macroporous glass foams [PDF]
This work produced glass foams from soda-lime glass bottles, bentonite, and alumina by the replica method. Compositions with different contents of bentonite (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%) were prepared and heat-treated at 800 °C.

Bioinspired nacre-like alumina with a bulk-metallic glass-forming alloy as a compliant phase
Bioinspired ceramics with micron-scale ceramic “bricks” bonded by a metallic “mortar” are projected to result in higher strength and toughness ceramics, but their processing is challenging as metals do not typically wet ceramics.

Wetting and bonding characteristics of selected liquid-metals with a high power diode laser treated alumina bioceramic [PDF]
Changes in the wettability characteristics of an alumina bioceramic occasioned by high power diode laser (HPDL) surface treatment were apparent from the observed reduction in the contact angle.

Mechanical and tribological properties of Fe/Cr-FeAl2O4-Al2O3 nano/micro hybrid composites prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering [PDF]
Fe/Cr–Al2O3 nanocomposite powders are prepared by H2 selective reduction of oxide solid solutions. These powders, an alumina powder and a starting oxide powder, are sintered by spark plasma sintering.

The effect of chemical and mineralogical composition of red mud on alkalinity parameters
Red mud is highly alkaline colloidal suspension, which remains after processing bauxite into alumina by Bayer’s proceedings. Despite repeated washing red mud keep strong alkalinity, due to the presence of residual base and a number of alkaline minerals ...

Gas and surface diffusion in modified γ-alumina systems [PDF]
The transport of pure gases through a microporous membrane is described. The alumina-based membrane (pores 2.5-4 nm) is suitable for Knudsen diffusion separation.

Alumina-coated hollow glass spheres/alumina composites
Coating of alumina onto the surface of hollow glass spheres was accomplished by controlled heterogeneous precipitation from aqueous solutions. The processing conditions were optimized to yield thin and uniform precursor coatings. After calcination, converting the precursor to alumina, the alumina-coated hollow glass spheres formed free-flowing powders ...

A soft sensor for the Bayer process
A soft sensor for measuring product quality in the Bayer process has been developed. The soft sensor uses a combination of historical process data recorded from online sensors and laboratory measurements to predict a key quality indicator, namely ...
