Reactive force field for lithium-aluminum silicates with applications to eucryptite phases [PDF]
We have parameterized a reactive force field (ReaxFF) for lithium aluminum silicates using density functional theory (DFT) calculations of structural properties of a number of bulk phase oxides, silicates, and aluminates, as well as of several representative clusters.

Association of indigo with zeolites for improved colour stabilization [PDF]
The durability of an organic colour and its resistance against external chemical agents and exposure to light can be significantly enhanced by hybridizing the natural dye with a mineral. In search for stable natural pigments, the present work focuses on the association of indigo blue with several zeolitic matrices (LTA zeolite, mordenite, MFI zeolite).

Structural properties of molten silicates from ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations: comparison between CaO-Al$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ and SiO$_2$ [PDF]
We present the results of first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations of molten silicates, based on the density functional formalism. In particular, the structural properties of a calcium aluminosilicate $ [$ CaO-Al$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ $ ]$ melt are compared to those of a silica melt.

Elastoplastic coupling to model cold ceramic powder compaction [PDF]
The simulation of industrial processes involving cold compaction of powders allows for the optimization of the production of both traditional and advanced ceramics. The capabilities of a constitutive model previously proposed by the authors are explored to simulate simple forming processes, both in the small and in the large strain formulation.

Tracing the development of dust around evolved stars: The case of 47 Tuc [PDF]
We observed mid-infrared (7.5-22 mum) spectra of AGB stars in the globular cluster 47 Tuc with the Spitzer telescope and find significant dust features of various types. Comparison of the characteristics of the dust spectra with the location of the stars

Experimental investigation of the elastoplastic response of aluminum silicate spray dried powder during cold compaction [PDF]
Mechanical experiments have been designed and performed to investigate the elasto-plastic behaviour of green bodies formed from an aluminum silicate spray dried powder used for tiles production. Experiments have been executed on samples obtained from cold compaction into a cylindrical mould and include: uniaxial strain, equi-biaxial flexure and high ...

Cloud-convection feedback in brown dwarfs atmosphere [PDF]
Numerous observational evidence has suggested the presence of active meteorology in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs. A near-infrared brightness variability has been observed. Clouds have a major role in shaping the thermal structure and spectral properties of these atmospheres.

Alkali-silica reaction – a multidisciplinary approach
In the last four years, a multidisciplinary study involving several research groups in Switzerland tackled a number of unsolved, fundamental issues about the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete.
