The Importance of the Ultra-alkaline Volcanic Nature of the Raw Materials to the Ductility of Roman Marine Concrete [PDF]
Roman-era concrete is the iconic embodiment of long-term physicochemical resilience. We investigated the basis of this behavior across scales of observations by coupling time-lapse (4-D) tomographic imaging of macroscopic mechanical stressing with structural microscopy and chemical spectroscopy on Roman marine concrete (RMC) from ancient harbors in ...

Electrically conductive thermal control coatings [PDF]
A coating characterized by low thermal absorption, high thermal emittance and high electrical conductivity comprises: (1) a fired oxide pigment comprising a minor amount of aluminum oxide and a major amount of zinc oxide; (2) sufficient water to provide ...

The Utility of Nanocomposites in Fire Retardancy [PDF]
Nanocomposites have been shown to significantly reduce the peak heat release rate, as measured by cone calorimetry, for many polymers but they typically have no effect on the oxygen index or the UL-94 classification. In this review, we will cover what is

Microwave emission from granular silicates [PDF]
Experimental finding is that mass absorption coefficient is independent of frequency but highly dependent on moisture content; effective conductivity increases with frequency, and low tangent is independent of frequency.

Chemical Equilibrium Abundances in Brown Dwarf and Extrasolar Giant Planet Atmospheres
We calculate detailed chemical abundance profiles for a variety of brown dwarf and extrasolar giant planet atmosphere models, focusing in particular on Gliese 229B, and derive the systematics of the changes in the dominant reservoirs of the major ...

Temperature Fluctuations driven by Magnetorotational Instability in Protoplanetary Disks [PDF]
The magnetorotational instability (MRI) drives magnetized turbulence in sufficiently ionized regions of protoplanetary disks, leading to mass accretion. The dissipation of the potential energy associated with this accretion determines the thermal structure of accreting regions.

Thermodynamic and rheological properties of rhyolite and andesite melts [PDF]
The heat capacities of a rhyolite and an andesite glass and liquid have been investigated from relative-enthalpy measurements made between 400 and 1800 K.

Outward Motion of Porous Dust Aggregates by Stellar Radiation Pressure in Protoplanetary Disks [PDF]
We study the dust motion at the surface layer of protoplanetary disks. Dust grains in surface layer migrate outward due to angular momentum transport via gas-drag force induced by the stellar radiation pressure. In this study, we calculate mass flux of the outward motion of compact grains and porous dust aggregates by the radiation pressure.

Low toxic corrosion inhibitors for aluminum in fresh water [PDF]
Combinations of chemical compounds that reportedly reduce the corrosion of aluminum in fresh water were evaluated. These included combinations of borates, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, silicates, and mercaptobenzothiazole.
