Variations in the anatomy of the inferior alveolar nerve

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2003
Variations in the anatomy of the inferior alveolar nerve were seen in 2 of the 20 dissections of the infratemporal fossa in 10 cadavers. A connecting nerve branch that originated from the auriculotemporal nerve joined the inferior alveolar nerve on both sides.

NERVE DAMAGE ASSOCIATED: WITH INFERIOR ALVEOLAR NERVE BLOCKS

The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1995
The authors reviewed 12 cases in which altered sensation occurred in the distribution of the inferior alveolar or lingual nerves following injection of a local anesthetic for restorative treatment only. Most patients suffered only partial damage, but recovery was poor.

Inferior Alveolar and Lingual Nerve Imaging

Atlas of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics, 2011
At present, there are no objective testing modalities available for evaluation of iatrogenic injury to the terminal branches of the trigeminal nerve, making such clinical diagnosis and management complicated for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Several imaging modalities can assist in the preoperative risk assessment of the trigeminal nerve as ...

Variation in the origin of the inferior alveolar nerve

Clinical Anatomy, 2002
AbstractThe inferior alveolar nerve and maxillary artery were studied in 40 human heads through infratemporal dissection; in one specimen, a unusual variation in the origin of the inferior alveolar nerve and its relationship with the surrounding structures was observed.

Inferior alveolar nerve lateral transposition

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2009
We determined the outcomes of 18 inferior alveolar nerve lateral transposition procedures in 15 consecutive patients. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique are discussed. The surgical protocol for inferior alveolar nerve transposition, followed by implant placement, presented excellent results, with complete recovery of the sensitivity ...

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials of Inferior Alveolar Nerve

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2006
The use of inferior alveolar nerve somatosensory evoked potentials may represent an objective means of evaluating sensory nerve function in the maxillofacial region. The aim of this work was to confirm the existence of a standard sequence of prominent events in the trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEPs) of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN ...

Inferior Alveolar Nerve Repositioning

Atlas of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics, 2001
Nerve repositioning is a viable alternative for patients with an atrophic edentulous posterior mandible. Patients, however, should be informed of the potential risks of neurosensory disturbance. Documentation of the patient's baseline neurosensory function should be performed with a two-point discrimination test or directional brush stroke test ...

Clinical anatomy of the superior alveolar nerves

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1984
Unilateral dissections were carried out on 19 human cadaver heads to demonstrate the superior alveolar nerves and vessels. The positions of foramina on the infratemporal surface of the maxilla were noted and, after decalcification of the bone, a transillumination technique was used to display the nerves and vessels in situ.

Decompression of inferior alveolar nerve: case report.

Journal (Canadian Dental Association), 2011
Paresthesia as a result of mechanical trauma is one of the most frequent sensory disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve. This case report describes surgical treatment for paresthesia caused by a compressive phenomenon within the mandibular canal.

A rare variation in the course of the inferior alveolar nerve

International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2010
Extra-canalicular variations of the inferior alveolar nerve are exceedingly rare and unreported. The authors report an unusual presentation of the inferior alveolar nerve perforating the ramus of the mandible with a very short intra-bony course and exiting laterally in a 20 year old indian female diagnosed with hemifacial microsomia.
