Diverse anthropogenic disturbances shift Amazon forests along a structural spectrum

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Volume 21, Issue 1, Page 24-32, February 2023., 2023
Amazon forests are being degraded by myriad anthropogenic disturbances, altering ecosystem and climate function. We analyzed the effects of a range of land‐use and climate‐change disturbances on fine‐scale canopy structure using a large database of profiling canopy lidar collected from disturbed and mature Amazon forest plots.

Anti‐Metalloprotease P‐I Single‐Domain Antibodies: Tools for Next‐Generation Snakebite Antivenoms

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
In order to address the global antivenom crisis, novel antivenoms need to present high therapeutic efficacy, broad neutralization ability against systemic and local damage, sufficient safety, and cost‐effectiveness. Due to biological characteristics of camelid single‐domain antibodies (VHH) such as high affinity, their ability to penetrate dense ...

Light Emitting Diode Photobiomodulation Enhances Oxidative Redox Capacity in Murine Macrophages Stimulated with Bothrops jararacussu Venom and Isolated PLA2s

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Photobiomodulation therapy associated with conventional antivenom treatment has been shown to be effective in reducing the local effects caused by bothropic venoms in preclinical studies. In this study, we analyzed the influence of photobiomodulation using light emitting diode (LED) on the oxidative stress produced by murine macrophages stimulated with

A “Dirty” Footprint: Macroinvertebrate diversity in Amazonian Anthropic Soils

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 27, Issue 19, Page 4575-4591, October 2021., 2021
Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs) are fertile soils found throughout the Amazon Basin, created by pre‐Columbian societies with sedentary habits. Much is known about the chemistry of these soils, yet their zoology has been neglected. Studying nine archeological sites in Amazonian regions and adjacent reference soils we found 673 morphospecies and, we ...

American oil palm from Brazil: Genetic diversity, population structure, and core collection

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 60, Issue 6, Page 3212-3227, November/December 2020., 2020
Abstract The American oil palm [Elaeis oleifera (Knuth) Cortés] has pronounced importance in oil palm breeding programs. Here, a germplasm bank (GB) of E. oleifera plants collected in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil was submitted to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) marker identification, selection, and use, aiming to characterize genetic diversity ...

Equality without equivalence: an anthropology of the common★

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 26, Issue 1, Page 146-166, March 2020., 2020
