Hepatic morphology and serum biochemical profile according to dry and rainy seasons in Pygocentrus nattereri (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigated the physiological and morphological adaptations of the liver of the carnivorous fish Pygocentrus nattereri (piranha) in response to seasonal variations (dry and rainy seasons) in the Brazilian Pantanal. The objective was to describe how the liver, a central organ in metabolic regulation, responds to environmental ...

Remarkable conservation effects for Amazon protected areas in vegetation growth trend, stability, and vulnerability

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Protected Areas (PAs) have been widely recognized as a crucial strategy to conserve biodiversity and maintain ecosystem services and functions, especially for the Amazon basin, the world’s largest tropical rainforest.

Biomass burning CCN enhance the dynamics of a mesoscale convective system over the La Plata Basin: a numerical approach [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2018
High aerosol loadings are discharged into the atmosphere every year by biomass burning in the Amazon and central Brazil during the dry season (July–December).

Staphylococcus aureusCausing Tropical Pyomyositis, Amazon Basin, Peru [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2013
Abstract We studied 12 Staphylococcus aureus isolates causing tropical pyomyositis in the Amazon Basin of Peru. All isolates were methicillin-susceptible; 11 carried Panton-Valentine leukocidin–encoding genes, and 5 belonged to multilocus sequence type 25 and possessed an extensive set of enterotoxins.

Old carbon contributes to aquatic emissions of carbon dioxide in the Amazon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Knowing the rate at which carbon is cycled is crucial to understanding the dynamics of carbon transfer pathways. Recent technical developments now support measurement of the 14C age of evaded CO2 from fluvial

Registered Clinical Trials of Ayahuasca and DMT: A Scoping Review

open access: yesClinical Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Interest in ayahuasca and its main component, N,N‐Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), has currently moved from historical and experimental use into modern clinical development. Yet, current evidence is fragmented, and systematic mapping of trial methods and design choices remains limited.

Environmental Policy Without Implementation? A Review of Factors Contributing to Implementation Gaps in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The sound formation of robust environmental policies is increasingly important for low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs) to achieve their national objectives and international commitments. However, policy implementation can be complex, and environmental policies may not be prioritised given other critical socio‐economic development issues ...

The role of the Amazon Basin moisture in the atmospheric branch of the hydrological cycle: a Lagrangian analysis [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2014
We used a Lagrangian model (FLEXPART) together with the 1979–2012 ERA-Interim reanalysis data to investigate the role of the moisture in the Amazon Basin in the regional hydrological budget over the course of the year.

Global-scale analysis of satellite-derived time series of naturally inundated areas as a basis for floodplain modeling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Floodplains play an important role in the terrestrial water cycle and are very important for biodiversity. Therefore, an improved representation of the dynamics of floodplain water flows and storage in global hydrological and land surface models is ...

Impacts of Social Assistance During the COVID‐19 Pandemic in Poor Remote Communities

open access: yesJournal of International Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Providing social assistance to poor populations in remote communities in times of crises, such as pandemics, is challenging but crucial. This paper examines how food assistance during the COVID‐19 pandemic affected people's behaviour, using our surveys among over 400 rural communities without road access in the Peruvian Amazon. Food assistance
