Effect of interannual climate variability on carbon storage in Amazonian ecosystems
Nature, 1998The Amazon Basin contains almost one-half of the world's undisturbed tropical evergreen forest as well as large areas of tropical savanna1,2. The forests account for about 10 per cent of the world's terrestrial primary productivity and for a similar fraction of the carbon stored in land ecosystems2,3, and short-term field measurements4 suggest that ...

The Problem of Analytical Level Shifting in Amazonian Ecosystem Research
2019This chapter explores implications of level shifting for understanding human ecological interactions generally, and in the Amazon Basin in particular. The ecosystem approach, because of its focus on the hierarchical level of organization above the population and the community, tends to emphasize macro-level processes such as trophic exchanges, nutrient

Ecosystem decay of Amazonian forest fragments: implications for conservation
2007I summarize key findings from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, the world’s largest and longest-running experimental study of habitat fragmentation. Although initially designed to assess the influence of fragment area on Amazonian biotas, the project has yielded insights that go far beyond the original scope of the study.
