Land use drives change in amazonian tree species
: The Amazonian rainforest has been subjected to exceptionally high rates of land use change (LUC), primarily for pasture. We present here an analysis of the impact of LUC on trees from studies made in Pará state.

An evolutionary and ecological perspective of Amazonian Hylaea species of Hymeneae (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) [PDF]
The resin-producing genus Hymenaea has an amphi-Atlantic distribution with 13 species being Neotropical and one occurring along the eastern coast of Africa.

Structure and function of soil fauna communities in Amazonian anthropogenic and natural ecosystems [PDF]
The soil biological conditions of two 5-year-old polyculture tree plantations in Amazonia were studied comparatively to a 13-year-old secondary forest and a nearby undisturbed primary forest. The polycultures had been planted to regenerate the soil degraded by land preparation and a former rubber tree monoculture.

Piranhas (Serrasalmus spp.) as markers of mercury bioaccumulation in Amazonian ecosystems
Mercury (Hg) concentration in fish depends on feeding strategies and age/size within the species as well as on water parameters related to acidity and Hg speciation. We chose two species of piranhas (Serrasalmus aff. eigenmanni and Serrasalmus rhombeus) to test their suitability as markers of Hg bioaccumulation.

Determinants of anuran assemblages in Amazonian White-sand Ecosystems
Amazonian white-sand ecosystems have predominantly sandy soils and a high amount of endemism, and several species found within them are adapted to long periods of drought. However, little is known about the variation in the structure of anuran assemblages in these ecosystems.

Response of testate amoebae to a late Holocene ecosystem shift in an Amazonian peatland [PDF]
To date there have only been two studies using testate amoebae as palaeoecological indicators in tropical peatlands. Here we present a new ∼500-year testate amoeba record from San Jorge, a domed peatland in Peruvian Amazonia, which has a well-constrained vegetation history based on pollen analysis. We observe a major shift from Hyalosphenia subflava to

Effects of climate variability and disturbances on the Amazonian terrestrial ecosystems dynamics [PDF]
This article examines how climate variability and ecological disturbances affect ecosystem composition and functioning in the Amazon region. We use a terrestrial ecosystem model, IBIS, and vary the treatment of climate (using either long‐term average climate, or actual historical variations in climate) and disturbances (with uniform disturbance rates ...
