Ambergris: The Search for Its Origin

A MBERGRIS is a rare wax-like pathological growth found in the stomach and intestines of the sperm whale (Physeter catodon). Its origin is still uncertain, but the condition may be due to the irritation caused by certain indigestible food, especially when the whale has been feeding on cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), a favorite food.

IN 1953, Dr. Robert Clarke while on board the whaling factory ship Southern Harvester found inside a sperm whale a boulder of ambergris weighing 926 lb.1. Through the kindness of the owners, Messrs. Chr. Salvesen and Co., of Leith, six samples were taken from places in the boulder, the positions being marked on Figs.
