Ambient air pollution exposure and cancer
Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between ambient air pollution exposure and cancer is reviewed. The well-documented urban/rural difference in lung cancer incidence and the detection of known carcinogens in the atmosphere gave rise to the hypothesis that long-term exposure to air pollution may have an effect on lung cancer risk.

Pressure-loss and flow coefficients inside a chordwise-finned, impingement, convection, and film air-cooled turbine vane [PDF]
Total-pressure-loss coefficients, flow discharge coefficients, and friction factors were determined experimentally for the various area and geometry changes and flow passages within an air-cooled turbine vane.

Cooling load forecasting-based predictive optimisation for chiller plants [PDF]
Extensive electric power is required to maintain indoor thermal comfort using heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, of which, water-cooled chiller plants consume more than 50% of the total electric power. To improve energy efficiency,

Ambient Air Toxic Releases and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania [PDF]
Previous studies have shown that women exposed to certain air pollutants are at an increased risk for preterm delivery and/or delivering a low birth weight newborn. Preterm delivery and low birth weight are associated with an increased risk for morbidity

Assessing the Value of Clean Air in a Developing Country: A Hedonic Price Analysis of the Jakarta Housing Market, Indonesia [PDF]
This paper is motivated by the common argument that clean air is a luxury good and has much less or even no value in a less developed country. It applies a hedonic property value analysis, a method commonly used to infer the value of clean air in ...

The Search for an Intelligible Principle: Setting Air Quality Standards under the Clean Air Act [PDF]
Heather L. Ross weighs in on the controversy surrounding the EPA's setting of National Ambient Air Quality Standards. She forcefully argues that balancing costs and benefits is the only intelligible principle that comports with common sense.

A balloon ozone measurement utilizing an optical absorption cell and an ejector air sampler [PDF]
Stratospheric ozone was measured from a balloon utilizing an ultraviolet absorption cell. The ambient air was sampled by means of an aspirator attached to the output end of the optical cell.

Stability relationship for water droplet crystallization with the NASA Lewis icing spray [PDF]
In order to produce small droplets for icing cloud simulation, high pressure air atomizing nozzles are used. For certain icing testing applications, median drop sizes as small as 5 mm are needed, which require air atomizing pressures greater than 3000 ...
