Breeding behavior of the American black bear Ursus americanus

Theriogenology, 2003
By means of videotape, we observed and timed courtship, mating, and refractoriness in the American black bear while confined in a semicaptive environment. Sixty-six courtships resulted in mating. During courtship, the male detected estrus and receptivity in the female. Courtship lasted 22.5+/-2.3s (mean+/-S.E.M.).

Analysis of the blood of american black bears

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1966
Abstract 1. 1. Blood was obtained from 4 black bears ( Ursus americanus ), 9–10 months of age, weights 17–27 kg, which had been captive 1–3 months. Blood was removed by cardiac puncture into a heparinized syringe, and taken quickly to the laboratory. 2. 2.

Concept formation in American black bears, Ursus americanus

Animal Behaviour, 2012
Despite their large relative brain size, bears have been neglected in studies of comparative cognition in comparison to their fellow carnivores, the social canines and pinnipeds. Here, three captive adult American black bears were presented with a series of natural concept discrimination tasks on a touchscreen computer, in which the discriminations ...

American black bear nuisance complaints and hunter take

Ursus, 2010
Abstract Regulated hunts of carnivores are believed to prevent property damage and other conflicts with people. Few studies have tested if public hunting reduces subsequent complaints about carnivores. We analyzed 10 years of data on nuisance complaints from a hunted American black bear (Ursus americanus) population in Wisconsin, USA.

Density of American black bears in New Mexico

The Journal of Wildlife Management, 2018
ABSTRACTConsidering advances in noninvasive genetic sampling and spatially explicit capture–recapture (SECR) models, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish sought to update their density estimates for American black bear (Ursus americanus) populations in New Mexico, USA, to aide in setting sustainable harvest limits. We estimated black bear density

Picture object recognition in an American black bear (Ursus americanus)

Animal Cognition, 2016
Many animals have been tested for conceptual discriminations using two-dimensional images as stimuli, and many of these species appear to transfer knowledge from 2D images to analogous real life objects. We tested an American black bear for picture-object recognition using a two alternative forced choice task. She was presented with four unique sets of

CRETINISM IN A NORTH AMERICAN BLACK BEAR(URSUS AMERICANUS)

Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound, 2002
Congenital hyperplastic goiter and cretinism were documented in a 16 month‐old male North American black bear (Ursus americanus). The cub was captured at approximately 8 months of age and maintained for an additional 8 months in captivity. Clinical signs included growth retardation, clumsiness, and facial dysmorphism.

Social Behavior of the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus)

2021
Black bears are generally described as a solitary species, that is, the primary contact they have with their own species is between sows and cubs and with mates during the breeding season. My data contradict the idea that bears are solitary and suggest that black bears have a well-developed social behavior that has developed such that they can access a

Distribution of American black bear occurrences and human–bear incidents in Missouri

Ursus, 2014
Abstract American black bears (Ursus americanus) were nearly extirpated from Missouri (USA) by the early 1900s and began re-colonizing apparent suitable habitat in southern Missouri following reintroduction efforts in Arkansas (USA) during the 1960s.
