Unique Population or Unique Species? Genetic Insights Into the Pygmy Freshwater Crocodiles of Northern Australia

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
There is debate over whether isolated populations of “pygmy” Australian freshwater crocodiles are a unique species. This is a conservation concern as these populations face unique challenges. We found some population differences which support these populations as being ecologically unique and valuable for targeted conservation.

American crocodile nesting in sediment-nourished habitats on Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Florida, USA

open access: yesAmphibia-Reptilia
Abstract The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is the most widely distributed New World crocodile. However, the species has experienced severe declines due to overexploitation. In South Florida, loss of nesting habitat, with coastal degradation from sea level rise and urban development has prompted American crocodiles to nest in novel habitats ...

Spatial‐Scale Evolutionary Bias Sheds Light on the Latitudinal Diversity Gradient

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Using Escherichia coli as a model species, our experimental findings reveal that populations in high‐fitness‐gain geographic regions undergo rapid expansion, competitively excluding populations from low‐fitness‐gain regions. This results in adaptive evolution that is biased toward areas with higher fitness potential.

An index to assess the level of vulnerability to crocodiles in coastal communities

open access: yesPhyllomedusa: Journal of Herpetology, 2023
Human-wildlife negative interactions are a recurring phenomenon worldwide, originating from the shared habitats and resources between both. In several coastal communities, negative interactions occur due to the presence of the American Crocodile

Evolutionary Regression and Species-Specific Codon Usage of TLR15

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) form an ancient family of innate immune receptors that detect microbial structures and activate the host immune response. Most subfamilies of TLRs (including TLR3, TLR5, and TLR7) are highly conserved among vertebrate species ...

A Review of the Effects of Freshwater Habitat Quality on Aquatic & Semi‐Aquatic Turtles

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
This literature review aims to provide a comprehensive review of the relationship between freshwater turtles and their aquatic environments. We also highlight areas which have been over‐ or under‐studied and offer recommendations for future research. ABSTRACT Freshwater turtles and terrapins require an aquatic habitat as part of their natural ecology ...

Tropicalization of the Temperate Zone: Spatiotemporal Variability of Winter Warming and Declining Freeze Days Across the United States

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 10, August 2026.
Unique characteristics of winter daily minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperatures and freeze days across the conterminous United States from 1952 to 2024 are examined. Results show spatial heterogeneity in Tmin/Tmax warming rates across the tropical‐temperate transition zone in the southeastern United States, and that the highest temperature on the

Redefining taxonomic boundaries of the genus Galtonia (Hyacinthaceae) and a new genus, Stellifloris, described

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract Genera form the basis for higher taxonomic classification and should be easily recognizable, predictive, and stable, and should reflect the evolutionary history of their constituents, with monophyly as a key principle of modern classification.
