Meiotic Pairing and Chromosome Morphology in American Elm

Forest Science, 1975
Abstract Meiosis in American elm (a tetraploid with 2N = 56 chromosomes) was regular at all stages. Fifty well-spread cells at diakinesis or metaphase I from each of four trees showed that 28 bivalents were regularly formed. The average number of chiasmata per bivalent, determined from 18 cells, was 2.15 with a range of 1 to 4.

Storage and Dewinging of American Elm Seed

Journal of Forestry, 1937
Abstract American elm has long been a very popular tree for prairie planting in the northern Great Plains region. Because of the fact that it has been believed generally that American elm seed could not be stored for any appreciable period of time it has been common practice to plant the seed shortly after it matures in the latter ...

American Elm Site-Index Growth Curves

Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science (1903-), 1990
Site-index curves for evaluating the growth potential of American elm in native timber stands in Kansas were developed from data gathered in the 1964-1965 Kansas forest inventory. American elm (Ulmus americana L.) is the most common native elm found in Kansas.

An Attempt to Induce Polyhaploidy in American Elm

Forest Science, 1970
Abstract Pollen from the three diploid species and irradiated pollen from American elm were used in crosses to induce polyhaploidy in tetraploid American elm. The resulting seedlings were tetraploid and morphologically typical of American elm, presumably as a consequence of self-fertilization. Forest Sci. 16: 137-138.

A Natural Hybrid Between American And Siberian Elms

Forest Science, 1970
Abstract A triploid elm was found among a group of atypical seedlings selected from a nursery bed of American elms. Cytological, morphological, and biochemical evidence indicated that it was a hybrid between American elm and Siberian elm. Although the tree has not borne any viable seed, it does produce apparently fertile pollen. Thus,

Self-Compatibility and Inbreeding Depression in American Elm

Forest Science, 1971
Abstract American elm is generally self-compatible although seed set after artificial selfing ranges from 0 to at least 67 percent of seed set after outcrossing. Effects of selfing are demonstrated for fruit and seed development, seed germination, and seedling height growth. Forest Sci. 17:321-322.
