Biochar‐Induced Shifts in Fungal Community Structure and Their Association With Soil Physical Properties in Degraded Soil From the Brazilian Semiarid

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soil degradation compromises ecosystem functioning. Biochar, a carbon‐rich amendment, has gained attention as a promising strategy to enhance soil structure and restore microbial balance. This study investigated the effects of two biochars, cashew bagasse biochar (CBB) and a co‐pyrolyzed biochar produced from sewage sludge and cashew pruning ...

Asphalted parking lots are environmental filters for multiple propagule dispersal and pollination strategies

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Understanding community assembly for wild species in anthropogenic settings has become increasingly important as biodiversity and ecosystem services are threatened by development pressures. Urban hardscape habitats such as parking lots are widespread, extreme, terrestrial anthropogenic environments that influence plant community assembly by way of ...

Can biochar ameliorate phosphorus deficiency and aluminium phytotoxicity in acid soils? : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Applied Science in Soil Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The use of biochar as soil amendment to enhance soil functionality is being increasingly investigated, with particular attention given to its effects on the sustainable increase of crop production and carbon (C) sequestration. To date, however, limited

Eco‐Friendly Bioplastic Film Produced With Green Plantain Starch (Musa paradisiaca L.): Effect of Activated Carbon Addition and Hydrothermal Modification

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Activated Carbon as a Reinforcing Material for Starch Bioplastics. ABSTRACT Eco‐friendly starch‐based bioplastic films reinforced with activated carbon (AC) were produced using green plantain starch in its native and heat‐moisture treatment (HMT) forms to overcome typical limitations of starch materials, such as low mechanical strength and poor water ...

Arbuscular mycorrhiza in the urban jungle: Glomeromycotina communities of the dominant city tree across Amsterdam

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Trees in cities provide a great number of benefits to people and nature, but they are challenged by harsh conditions. Trees rely on helpful fungi in their roots to get essential nutrients from the soil, but we do not know which of these fungi are resistant to city landscapes.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi enhance the saline-alkali tolerance of apple rootstock M9-T337 by regulating chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and hormone balance

open access: yesFruit Research
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can establish symbiotic relationships with most fruit trees to promote their growth and development under adverse stresses.

Sharing the light, impact of solar parks on plant productivity, soil microbes and soil organic matter

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Solar parks enable renewable energy production at a large scale, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the effects of this change in land use on vegetation and soil health are still largely unknown. In this study, we determined the impacts of solar parks on vegetation, soil biota and soil carbon between and below solar panels.
