Betaine increases net portal absorption of volatile fatty acids in Iberian pigs

open access: yesAnimal, 2021
Betaine is an osmolyte with the potential to increase volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production and hence improve intestinal health. The present study investigated how betaine affects portal and arterial concentrations and net portal absorption (NPA) of VFA ...

Developmental Pharmacokinetics and Safety of Ibuprofen and Its Enantiomers in the Conventional Pig as Potential Pediatric Animal Model

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2019
Pediatric drug development, especially in disease areas that only affect children, can be stimulated by using juvenile animal models not only for general safety studies, but also to gain knowledge on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of ...

Rapid hepatic clearance of full length CCN-2/CTGF: a putative role for LRP1-mediated endocytosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
CCN-2 (connective tissue growth factor; CTGF) is a key factor in fibrosis. Plasma CCN-2 has biomarker potential in numerous fibrotic disorders, but it is unknown which pathophysiological factors determine plasma CCN-2 levels.

Influence of para-aminohippuric acid analysis on net portal-drained viscera flux of nutrients in pigs

open access: yesAnimal, 2018
In nutrition studies, para-aminohippuric acid (PAH) is a marker frequently used to measure blood flow in pigs, which is essential for estimating portal-drained viscera (PDV) flux of nutrients.

Expression of Human Organic Anion Transporters in the Choroid Plexus and Their Interactions With Neurotransmitter Metabolites

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2003
: The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the expression of human organic anion transporter 1 (hOAT1) and hOAT3 in the choroid plexus of the human brain and their interactions with neurotransmitter metabolites using stable cell lines ...

Effects of dietary inclusion with rapeseed cake containing high glucosinolates on nitrogen metabolism and urine nitrous oxide emissions in steers

open access: yesAnimal Nutrition, 2022
Two consecutive trials were conducted to investigate the effects of glucosinolates (GLS) in rapeseed cake (RSC) on nitrogen (N) metabolism and urine nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in steers. In trial 1, 8 steers and 4 levels of RSC, i.e.

Renal functional adaptation of the adult kidney following transplantation to the child [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
Renal functional adaptation of the adult kidney following transplantation to the child. Nineteen child renal transplant recipients, aged 1.3 to 19.2 years at transplantation, and their adult living-related kidney donors, 27 to 60 years of age at ...

Substrate Stimulation of P-Aminohippuric Acid Transport: Effect on Uptake and Runout

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1975
The ability of penicillin pretreatment to increase PAH accumulation by slices of newborn rabbit renal cortex was dissected into two components, uptake and runout. The oxygen-requiring component of the uptake process was significantly enhanced by penicillin treatment, whereas runout was unaffected.
