Renal production and excretion of ammonia
The American Journal of Medicine, 1964Abstract The secretion of ammonia, once thought to be limited to distal tubules and collecting ducts, has been shown to occur throughout the length of the nephron of the rat. As much as half or more of the ammonia excreted in the urine may be added to tubular fluid in the proximal segment.

Photosynthetic production of ammonia
Experientia, 1982The conversion of solar energy into suitable redox energy through photosynthesis of the water-splitting type carried out by intact or reconstituted systems is of great interest and significance, and a major effort is presently under way to use this process to provide ‘biofuels’ on a renewable basis.

1985
As mentioned in chapter I, synthetic ammonia (NH3) has become the principal source of all nitrogen fertilizers, particularly since 1945. At present, over 95% of all commercial fertilizer nitrogen is supplied by or derived from synthetic NH3; only minor percentages are supplied by natural sodium nitrate, byproduct NH3 from coke-oven gas (usually ...

Gut ammonia production and its modulation
Metabolic Brain Disease, 2008Systemic hyperammonemia has been largely found in patients with cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy, and ammonia plays a major role in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy. However, controversial points remain: a) the correlation between plasma ammonia levels and neurophysiological impairment.

Influence of potassium on renal ammonia production
American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1976The influence of potassium homeostasis on ammonia production was investigated with both cortical and medullary slices from rat kidney. Renal cortical slices from rats depleted of potassium by dietary restriction produced 31% more NH3 than slices from pair-fed controls.

Regulation of ammonia production in the rat kidney
Advances in Enzyme Regulation, 1967Administration of actinomycin D to acidotic rats inhibited the initial rise in renal glutamine deaminating enzymes with no effect on the adaptation of renal ammonia production. These results suggested that changes in activity as well as level of glutaminase are important in the control of ammonia synthesis in the kidney.

Ammonia production by the small intestine of the rat
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 19761. Slices of duodenum and jejunum produce ammonia from glutamine in vitro. 2. Ammoniagenesis does not increase in response to acidosis or potassium deficiency, two conditions known to cause enhanced ammoniagenesis in the kidney. 3. Gut contains glutaminase 1 as well as gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. 4.

The Production of Ammonia by Multiheme Cytochromes c
2014The global biogeochemical nitrogen cycle is essential for life on Earth. Many of the underlying biotic reactions are catalyzed by a multitude of prokaryotic and eukaryotic life forms whereas others are exclusively carried out by microorganisms. The last century has seen the rise of a dramatic imbalance in the global nitrogen cycle due to human behavior
