Theory of mind deficits in Korsakoff's syndrome and alcohol use disorder: Similar deficits but different underlying cognitive processes

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 49, Issue 9, Page 1962-1971, September 2025.
The aim of this study was to explore Theory of Mind (ToM) in Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) compared with severe alcohol use disorder (sAUD). We used a cognitive ToM test that reduces the cognitive load and global cognitive screening, working memory, and executive tests.

HEAL‐X: A Novel Classification System for Xylazine Associated Wounds

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 22, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT The opioid crisis has been exacerbated by xylazine, a veterinary sedative increasingly present in illicit drugs. Xylazine causes severe skin wounds that increase the risk of morbidity. Current wound classification systems fail to address the unique features of this injury, creating a need for a tailored assessment and treatment approach.

Cues, context, and long-term memory: the role of the retrosplenial cortex in spatial cognition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Spatial navigation requires representations of landmarks and other navigation cues. The retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is anatomically positioned between limbic areas important for memory formation, such as the hippocampus and the anterior thalamus, and ...

Evidence for a Common Founder and Clinical Characteristics of Japanese Families with the MAPT R406W Mutation

open access: yesDementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders Extra, 2011
Background/Aim: Mutations in MAPT cause frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17). Patients with the MAPT R406W mutation were reported to show phenotypic heterogeneity in different ethnic backgrounds.

Post-concussion Vulnerability to Transient Global Amnesia

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2020
Few studies have investigated transient global amnesia (TGA) in the context of a concussion and the concussion sequelae following TGA. Here we review the case of a 43-year-old male with onset of transient global anterograde and retrograde amnesia 22 days

Memory consolidation from seconds to weeks: A three-stage neural network model with autonomous reinstatement dynamics

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2014
Declarative long-term memories are not created at an instant. Gradual stabilization and temporally shifting dependence of acquired declarative memories on different brain regions - called systems consolidation - can be tracked in time by lesion ...

Designing a mobile augmented memory system for people with traumatic brain injuries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Augmented memory systems help people remember events in their lives. Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often have memory impairments. We conducted a user study to learn about strategies individuals with TBI use to remember events in their ...
