Amniotic Fluid Index: Correlation with Amniotic Fluid Volume
American Journal of Perinatology, 1992We calculated the amniotic fluid indexes (AFIs) of 310 women on 459 occasions. Normative data were analyzed and compared with data in several high-risk groups. In the normal gestations there was a progressive increase in AFI with advancing gestation until 32 weeks, after which there was a decline.

Amniotic fluid volumes in normal pregnancies
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1972Abstract One hundred and eighty-seven amniotic fluid determinations were performed on 115 patients from 15 to 42 weeks' gestation by the para-aminohippurate method of Charles and Jacoby. Our results show a wide normal range which increases as pregnancy progresses. The significant variations in individual trends are shown.

SUMMARYThe various ways of estimating amniotic fluid volumes during pregnancy are all based on dilution techniques involving the use of dyes, radioactive isotopes, or such inert substances as inulin or sodium aminohippurate. Much work still needs to be done to show the limits of normality of the quantity of amniotic fluid at various stages of pregnancy.
