Therapeutic agents and biocides for ocular infections by free-living amoebae of Acanthamoeba genus
Survey of Ophthalmology, 2017Acanthamoeba keratitis is a sight-threatening infectious disease. Resistance of the cystic form of the protozoan to biocides and the potential toxicity of chemical compounds to corneal cells are the main concerns related to long-term treatment with the clinically available ophthalmic drugs. Currently, a limited number of recognized antimicrobial agents

[Amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba--causative agents of human infections].
Epidemiologie, mikrobiologie, imunologie : casopis Spolecnosti pro epidemiologii a mikrobiologii Ceske lekarske spolecnosti J.E. Purkyne, 2012Amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba Volkonsky, 1931 are ubiquitous, amphizoic organisms with a cosmopolitan distribution. Pathogenic strains are the causative agents of a difficult to treat disease, granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE), and skin infections in immunocompromised individuals, and of a painful corneal disease--amoebic keratitis (AK) in ...

The genus KorotnevellaGoodkov, 1988 (Amoebozoa: Dactylopodida) comprises amoebae with a complex cell coat that include a layer of scales covering the entire cell surface. Until now no Korotnevella species were known to form cysts. Here we describe two new species of genus Korotnevella and provide a light- and electron-microscopic report of encystment ...

Two new species of the recently described genus Stenamoeba, named S. berchidia and S. sardiniensis were isolated from a single soil sample on Sardinia, Italy. Both share morphological features characteristic to Stenamoeba and form in phylogenetic analyses together with other Stenamoeba spp. a highly supported clade within the family Thecamoebidae.

Using isoelectric focusing, the zymograms of 23 pathogenic and nonpathogenic Naegleria strains were studied for the activity of 16 enzymes. Certain enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase, L-threonine dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase, acid phosphatase, malic enzyme, and leucine aminopeptidase) proved particularly useful from a practical point of view as they

Twenty-three freshwater samples with sediment taken from two regions in the Arctic, Spitzbergen and Greenland, and one region in sub-Antarctica, Ile de la Possession, were cultured for amoebae at 37 degrees C and room temperature (RT). Only two samples yielded amoebae at 37 degrees C and the two isolates were identified from their morphological ...

In order to verify the contribution of scanning electron microscopy to the taxonomic study of free-living amoebae, the authors studied at the encysted stage 21 strains of free-living amoebae representing 20 species (1 Naegleria gruberi, 1 Tetramitus rostratus and 18 Acanthamoeba sp).
