open access: closedKlinika oczna, 2010
The aim of the paper was to describe the role of amoebas of the genus Acanthamoeba in the pathogenesis of keratitis.A review of literature concerning the role of amoebas of the genus Acanthamoeba in the pathogenesis of keratitis was done.Amoebas of the genus Acanthamoeba can be widely found in soil, air, fresh as well as saline water and as facultative

Regeneration of test in testate amoebae of the genus Arcella (Tubulinea, Arcellinida)

European Journal of Protistology, 2016
Although the presence of test is the most fundamental synapomorphy of arcellinid lobose amoebae, the significance of tests in maintenance of the biological functions of these organisms is still largely unclear. This paper demonstrates the effect of the artificial test removal on the behaviour, ultrastructure and reproduction of the testate lobose ...

Therapeutic agents and biocides for ocular infections by free-living amoebae of Acanthamoeba genus

Survey of Ophthalmology, 2017
Acanthamoeba keratitis is a sight-threatening infectious disease. Resistance of the cystic form of the protozoan to biocides and the potential toxicity of chemical compounds to corneal cells are the main concerns related to long-term treatment with the clinically available ophthalmic drugs. Currently, a limited number of recognized antimicrobial agents

Ptolemeba n. gen., a Novel Genus of Hartmannellid Amoebae (Tubulinea, Amoebozoa); with an Emphasis on the Taxonomy of Saccamoeba [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, 2014
AbstractHartmannellid amoebae are an unnatural assemblage of amoeboid organisms that are morphologically difficult to discern from one another. In molecular phylogenetic trees of the nuclear‐encoded small subunit rDNA, they occupy at least five lineages within Tubulinea, a well‐supported clade in Amoebozoa. The polyphyletic nature of the hartmannellids

[Isolation and identification of an amoeba of the genus Naegleria].

open access: closedZhongguo ji sheng chong xue yu ji sheng chong bing za zhi = Chinese journal of parasitology & parasitic diseases, 1989
One pathogenic free-living amoeba, strain W042302 (Fig. 1.), was first isolated from the cooling water of a power plant in Shanghai, in April, 1986. It could result in the deaths of mice, and recovered from the brain tissue of the dead mice. This pathogenic free living amoeba could be induced into trophozoite with two flagellae (Fig. 2.).

Cyst-forming amoebae of the genus Korotnevella Goodkov, 1988 (Amoebozoa: Dactylopodida), with description of two new species

European Journal of Protistology, 2015
The genus KorotnevellaGoodkov, 1988 (Amoebozoa: Dactylopodida) comprises amoebae with a complex cell coat that include a layer of scales covering the entire cell surface. Until now no Korotnevella species were known to form cysts. Here we describe two new species of genus Korotnevella and provide a light- and electron-microscopic report of encystment ...

Environmental associations and the paleoecological significance of the genus Pyxidicula Ehrenberg,1838 and Pyxidicula muskegii sp. nov. in the Hudson and James Bay region peatlands, Canada

Canadian journal of earth sciences (Print)
An environmental proxy routinely used in paleoecological studies of peatlands is testate amoebae, which are used to infer successional and hydrological shifts through time.

Canadian field-naturalist
Arcella is a genus of testate amoebae with a radially symmetrical shell composed of secreted material arranged in hexagonal units. Within the genus, species are distinguished by the morphology and dimensions of the shell.
