The secret in their eyes: A review of the recessus orbitalis, a unique structure of flatfishes

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The recessus orbitalis is an organ responsible for projecting the eyeball above the level of the head and is uniquely present in flatfishes. The organ consists of two interconnected chambers filled with interstitial fluid and is internally coated with smooth muscle fibers that act as a double‐pump system.

Investigating the behavioral responses of nektonic and benthic tadpoles elicited by the presence of a predatory nektonic fish

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Different defensive strategies are used by tadpoles to avoid or escape from predators, and it is possible that differences in the microhabitat of prey and predators influence the defensive strategies used by tadpoles. Therefore, we experimentally tested whether the presence of a nektonic fish predator (Oreochromis niloticus) reduces the time of ...

A Latitudinal Gradient of Reference Genomes

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Global inequality rooted in legacies of colonialism and uneven development can lead to systematic biases in scientific knowledge. In ecology and evolutionary biology, findings, funding and research effort are disproportionately concentrated at high latitudes, while biological diversity is concentrated at low latitudes.

Toward a Global Science of Conservation Genomics: Coldspots in Genomic Resources Highlight a Need for Equitable Collaborations and Capacity Building

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Advances in genomic sequencing have magnified our understanding of ecological and evolutionary mechanisms relevant to biodiversity conservation. As a result, the field of conservation genomics has grown rapidly. Genomic data can be effective in guiding conservation decisions by revealing fine‐scale patterns of genetic diversity and adaptation.
