Amphibians are a diverse class of animals with a unique life cycle. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to the wide variability in normal hematologic parameters. Reference values are scarce, and normal hematology of many species is poorly understood.

Despite advances in exotic animal endoscopy, descriptions involving amphibians are scarce. Amphibian endoscopy shares some similarities with reptiles, especially in lizards. Selected procedures are discussed, including stomatoscopy, gastroscopy, coelioscopy, and biopsy of coelomic organs and lesions.

This article is an introduction to common amphibian surgical techniques. No overwhelming obstacles preclude incorporating amphibian surgeries into the repertoire of veterinary clinicians. With the proper tools and reference materials and a little practice, the skills needed may be readily acquired.

Amphibians are susceptible to a multitude of skin disorders, many of which can appear grossly similar. The most common clinical presentations include hyperemia, discoloration, dermal mass, ulceration, and necrosis. Many amphibian skin diseases are related to captive husbandry. The diagnostic process starts with environmental evaluations, a full history,

The complex life history of many amphibians has been designed to take advantage of the resources of two completely different habitats. The aquatic free-living amphibian larva is different from the terrestrial adult regarding morphology, physiology and behavioural patterns. Therefore, in the life-time of an individual amphibian, two discontinuous growth

Limited research findings up-to-date with a few amphibian models do not permit a generalisation of ageing phenomena in the class Amphibia. Short-lived species of amphibians show gradual senescence comparable to the pattern seen in laboratory mammals. Long-lived species (mostly urodeles) continue to grow throughout life and are believed to exhibit very ...

The treatment of diseases in amphibians presents unique challenges for the clinician. This article describes the basic principles in selecting and administering therapeutics, and provides drug dose rates used successfully in amphibians. The importance of proper husbandary and hygiene, as it relates to amphibian health and medical management of disease,

Amphibians are commonly kept in laboratory and zoological facilities and are becoming more frequent as pets. However, many amphibian species are declining in the wild owing to a variety of infectious and noninfectious diseases. This article reviews the current state of knowledge of mycobacteriosis in amphibian species, including pathogenesis, clinical ...

The amphibian pronephric system is reviewed in terms of ontogeny and phylogeny, function, growth, and degeneration. The cassical concept of a derivation from a hypothetical segmental tubular archinephros, and of its nephrotomal origins are well known, and earlier workers have accumulated considerable information about the origin, development, and ...

Spontaneous neoplasia is rare in all three orders of Amphibia. Tumors are documented in most major organ systems, and some have various underlying etiologies, including viral infection, environmental contaminants, and genetic predisposition. Currently, treatment options are limited to removal of the predisposing condition(s), palliative care, surgical ...
